Get Repo Vendor Catalogs to familiarize yourself with what is being made [signs/globes], so that HOPEFULLY you don't get taken to the cleaners by less than Honorable dealers/sellers.
MOST Repo'd globes are Dated, VERY VERY few signs are Dated, some MOBIL shields have License By MOBIL, But those are also a New Repo'd item.

Hard to do sometimes, But IF you have Doubts about something, Walk Away [while your still learning].

You need to get the two book volume of Gas Globes by Scott Benjamin and Wayne Henderson. It is the Bible I use just like Jack Sim's book on Gas pumps. It is a little old but will give you idea of what they are worth. Richard

Thanks. Those are the kinds of things I was looking for. I would like to read more about this stuff but didn't know what to look for. I go to some local auctions and have bought some things at them and have bought some off of local collectors. I have sold some of the rougher signs I had. I am buying the nicer stuff, going for bigger signs and looking for neons. My biggest problem is not knowing what other forums there are and finding connections with people who have same interests/collections. If you were getting started collecting, can you give me some advice??

This is the place to start. As far as collecting? Collect what YOU want. Some members collect a particular item, such as maps, or globes. Some members collect a particular company, I fall into that group. then there are those, who get WHATEVER they want.

Follow the advice given. Buy a few books, ask a LOT of questions, and if you're not sure... Walk away!

BTW. Welcome to Oldgas...

If your near Tulsa, get a hold of Souperhigh [Maurice Campbell], OR near Mangum get a hold of 66Phillips [Butch Greer].
Check the collectors listed by state in the Guest Book;

This subject has been discuessed at some length (pages?)before under the general petroliana discussion forum as I remember.I think the topic was..Advice To Beginners..or something like that and was put up by Jarvis.

Perhaps if you move this post over there someone(I don't know how}will pull that up for you or tell you how to find it.I seem to remember that it was a very informative discussion.

Thanks for all the great advice. I bought the books you guys recommended and finally got the courage to call Maurice. That was a very pleasant, informative conversation and was invited to look at his collection. Wow, that was a treat. I now have my 2nd , 3rd, and fourth globe thanks to him! And now have plans to attend 'It's A Gas' in Columbia, MO. I would like to ask if any of you have ever attended & could give me a little insight on what to expect or maybe advice? I'd like to thank everyone for the advice & most importantly, Maurice Campbell.

I'm glad you were able to talk with Maurice! You probably learned more in your time with him than a lot of collectors learn in a whole year on their own!
You'll learn a lot at gas & oil shows too if you aren't overwhelmed by all of the stuff for sale! Look, listen, learn!
Welcome aboard!-----KEVIN

Meeting Maurice is a step in the right direction especially if your into gas globes. I don't believe there is a nicer guy in this hobby. Going to its a gas is a great first show of the year. Usually some really nice globes show up and also some killer signs. It was the first show I ever went to and have been going back ever since.

Originals only for me. Always looking for Simpson oil, Super A, and MFA oil cans and globes.
