Question on sight glasses.....Seems like the 40's and 50's pumps I get always have scratches or 'burn' marks on the end of the sight glasses. Does anyone know of a way to polish or sand or smooth the scratches and burn marks out of the glass?,,,Thanks

I don't know about the "burn" marks, but what you might be seeing, is the brownish deposit inside the sight glass, left by old gas deposits? If this is what you are talking about, just take the glass off, and rub the inside of the glass with "000" steel wool. It won't damage the glass, but will remove the stain. Hope this helps.

I've had do deal with that problem often. If you have a local shop that does glass beveling, they might be able to help. Glass beveling involves grinding then polishing the glass. I use a shop here in Portland. In fact, I need to take a couple of A-38 sight glass in. It usually costs me $20-25. If the scratches are deep emough to catch your fingernail, they might only be able to smooth over the scratch, not totally eliminate it. It will still improve the look. I assume that you can't get a repo. for your type of pump. You might consider contacting the Eastwood co. They advertise in Hemmings and sell a 'do-it-your self' kit for polishing auto windshields that might work. Good luck!

You might just try a clear coat its not a permanent fix but its a cheap fix for light scratches.
