Hello all,
I have a 1939 Chevron Station building on Rt 66 in Amarillo that I've been playing with. I use it as an office and shop and would like to put the outside back in 1939 form. Looking for info on signage and other stuff that may have been outside displays. Don't have a clue myself but this seems like the place to start.

We have a small mobil sign (now @ $90) and the large flying red horse, for sale on auction if you'd like to see them, go to www.ebay.com There you can do an Advanced Search, search by Sellers Name: type in: penkdog then look at Sellers Items and scroll down. The big sign, so far, only has a 99 cent bid!!! Best of luck to you in your new adventure with the building.

Welcome Paul!

You've definitely come to the right place -- you're right about that. There are definitely people here who can help you out with info, photos, and actual items like signs and such. If I were you, I'd start out by looking through the station photos at VintageGas . What you do with the station basically depends on how much cash you want to put into it. If you want to go all out, you cuold get a couple of nice tall computer pumps, and a full size pole sign to go out front. A lubester or an oil can rack would be nice touches too.

Hey Paul,
If you want to "put the outside back in 1939 form", you'll have to first figure out if it was originally a company owned "Standard Oil Company of Texas" station or a "Chevron Dealer" station. The signage and color schemes are totally different. My guess is that in Texas in 1939, it would have been a "Standard" station.

Best of luck with your project.

If you need an air meter for the station see my website www.crspub.com. It is presently down, due to some major changes, but will be up in a few days.

I forgot to mention that I have been in contact with the original owners son, who pumped gas for his dad in the late 40's. He confirmed that it was a "Dealer station" and recalled it being a painted a combination of off white, pea green and maroon. Haven't figured out how to post a picture. We have restored the stucco exterior, replaced the roof and installed a new tin ceiling under the canopy as well as the neon and canopy lights.

So with the time frame, and the colors of the station that you described, your pumps should be painted cream and green... The maroon was typicly used for trim and signs...That big upright panel on the roof, would most likely have the Standard Oil sign with the old style "Chevron" logo

After further review, the "Chevron Gas Station" was introduced in 1945. The cream, green and maroon colors were also introduced at that time. (The "winged V" Chevron logo also originated at that time.) Therefore, in 1939 the station was more than likely branded "Pasotex" using the old Standard Oil of California "cloud" logo.

Hope that helps.

I believe that it was in 1931 that the consolidation of the service stations happened. But they did not use the Chevron name, only the tri-colored chevron logo. They were at that time known as Standard Stations Inc.
