I recently got one of these pumps and have some questions regarding the pump. Would appreciate contact with anyone who has one of these pumps, photos or knowlege about them. It is the version with the round face bezels. Thanks. Bill Fortune, Carthage, MO.

Pump is not for sale now. My question concerns what type of clock mechanism should be in the pump. One side had the face covererd over. When I took the covers off the clock mechanism (Trident) had provisons for a meter face only on one side. Everything looks original as all the guts are still hooked up. Could this have been modified some time in the past? Did these pumps ever come with only one clock meter? If so why did both sides have cut outs for a meter face. Also on the side with no meter face is a small oval cutout area below where the meter would go. What would this be for? Thanks for any info or photos.

Many pumps had an option of having a face or faces (if it was a twin) on one side only. Look at the 800 series Wayne pumps in my book, I explain in the captions the variations available, and you will see I put down some model numbers for pumps that had faces on one side only. My guess is the purchasers were station owners who put the pumps against a building.

Bill:

Your pump may have been on a farm.

I've got an American 900 with only one face on the computer. There is a 'block off' steel plate on the other side attached to the inside of the door.

The pump is original right down to the single coat of factory red paint.

My pump was used at a farm - so you only needed to see one side. Matter-of-fact, there is only two rows of cut-outs in the single porcelain face: the top row (which would normally be the 'price' wheels) actually shows the gallons pumped. And the other holes show the price-per-gallon wheels.

I have no idea why the farmer would need to see the price-per-gallon on the pump when he didn't have a calculating price wheel section in the VR.

Later . . .

Jim

I was told that this pump came directly from a farm. This photo shows the panel that has been blocked off. It has been this way for quite a while based on the appearance of the metal used to block off the openings. One question was what the small opening below the meter opening would have been used for.

When I pulled the skins I discovered that the blocked of side had no meter going to it. As can be seen the meter only goes to the side with the face that could be seen. The meter appears to be original to the pump. Why would they have used a skin that had openings for a meter and crudely blocked
the openings when the meter only shows on one side. If it came from the factory this way why wouldn't they have used a blank skin?

Bill, I bought this pump in September of 2006 along with several others, They all came out of a Warehouse on Cape Cod, MA. No history was known other than 1 junk guy was paid to get rid of them for the Oil Co. that owned the building. I looked into this before I sold it, and I believe that there is a rod missing that would have connected the two meter sides together. I have the same meter in an Erie clockface if you need a picture. Pretty cool how a pump can make it around the country. Rick

A picture of the set up would be great. Might
be able to make up something if I can't find another half meter. I noticed that there was a tag from the Pacific Oil Co. of Mass on the pump and wondered where that might be.

I will take a picture tomorrow, Cape Cod is about 3 hours from me, There are hundreds of Oil Co. in this area. I have never heard of Pacific Oil Co. could have just been a small delivery co. vs. a large co.

Commercial trucking/cab etc. companies were more likely to buy new pumps for high volume/convenient use.

Very few farms/ranches ever bought a new pump for their own use. Most pumps for this use were supplied by the bulk dealer, normally free of charge as long as he supplied your need for fuel. Bulk dealers always had/have a few pumps that had been taken out of stations for 1 reason or another or when station decided to upgrade with new pumps/image.

When stamping out sheet metal, it would be cost effective to have all done the same instead of having to make another die for a cheaper model.

Bill, here is the picture of the similar meter from my Erie, As you can see, the side you are missing is easily attached (If you can find one), Rick

Thanks for the photos. That's kind of what I expected although with the light switch as currently positioned a meter face would not fit on that side. Possibly the switch has been replaced. It could easily be moved an inch or so if needed.

Bill, if you need a meter for the other side, I think I have one. Send me an email if you are interested!
