I'm so backwards with the green movement that I just bought {another} diesel truck. At $4.00 a gallon, I can get nearly 20 miles and not have to look for an extension cord! Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Are you sure that $1.16 per KWH is correct? that sounds really high. I believe we pay .21¢ per KWH on Long Island and we're considered the highest in the nation.

Just saying that something doesn't read right. (???)

Kevin:

According to wiseGEEK.com - your area averages 7.8 cents per Killowat Hour in costs.

Later . . .

I have no clue, just got that email from someone and passed it on. I don't even know what a kilowatt amounts to. LOL but I bet our costs are just as high or higher as we live in the boonies, with not much population base!

Funny. My dad and I were at the Mall of America last weekend killing some time before we had to bowl in a tournament. When we parked in the parking ramp there were a bunch of spaces marked for electric car charging stations. They took a credit card and then you would plug in your car while you shopped.

Where do these people think the power comes from? Sure you are not burning gas, but the power has to come from somewhere. I dont think the cars like the volt are any more green than most other cars. My opinion is that the hybrids that generate their own power are the better ones.

Kevin, A kilowatt of electricity is the electricity consumed by a device(s) utilizing 1000 watts for a period of 1 hour. In other words if you turned on ten 100 watt light blubs for one hour you will have consumed one kilowatt of electricity.

The idea sounds great on paper but then again, who would want to have natural gas in their tank. Pretty scary thought!

No worse than sitting/having over 35 gal. of gasoline in your tank.
Under the right conditions, 1 gal. of gasoline is equivalent to 1 stick of Dynamite.

I work for an electric and natural gas utility. Kevin: I did a quick search and I think you are paying about .08 cents per kilowatt hour (KWH). To get to KWH you take the number of watts an item is, divide by 1000 and then multiply by the number of hours it runs. So, if you have a 100 watt bulb and it runs for 5 hours that is.....1/2 of a KWH. If you pay .08 cents per KWH that would cost......04 cents. So if you have a 1000 watt hair dryer and run it for 1/2 an hour (who has that much hair) it would cost....04 cents. So, you may need to run those numbers again on the cost.

Someone mentioned natural gas to run a car. We experimented with compressed natural gas (CNG) and it worked ok. Biggest problems was getting stations set up and you had to use too much trunk space for the equipment needed.

If it takes 16 KWH to charge a Volt, then that would be about $1.28 to "fill up" at .08 cents per KWH. Obviously that doesn't include the cost of any equipment needed at home. $1.28 to go 270 miles is not bad for a commuter car back and forth to work. That would buy about 1/3 of a gallon of gas. At 15 miles to the gallon you would go about 5 miles. I am not a big fan of the Volt and I agree you have to make electricity and that is not necessarily green either. Plus there are other issues with electric cars as well..anyway, thought I would just run a little math.

I take all those pass-around email "facts" with a grain of salt. Too many have some hidden agenda and bend the truth quite a bit.

You ain't just kidding, still looking for them college girls at Lowes to get my windsheild washed !

Lot of guys ran propane back in the 70s,not such a good deal now I don't think, and they had such big tank in bed they couldn't haul much.
Shop teacher is running Mazda truck off series of batterys with lots of success,he done this years ago.
Heard it said it takes 1 dollar to run 110 bulb 24 hours.
What does these have to do with a Volt -nothing.
One more never seen a Volt, with a trailer full of pumps behind it.
