Hello, All.

I am a long time "lurker" of this board and finally decided to get on board. One of the reasons is b/c I found two porcelain auto signs...a Cadillac & Buick Authorized Service 11 3/4" round.

I was wondering if any of you experienced folks could review the images I have and be able to tell me if these are the real deal and the approximate time frame these were produced. I did my best to take high quality photos.

Thank you in advance for your help everyone.

I did not even open a link, There is no need, being that size and being dealership signs they are reproductions.

Here are Greg's signs.....

As Rick stated they are repops.... The signs are way too small to have been used in any Dealership that I have personally been in or seen photos of.....

Thank you for your insight.

I personally thought they might have been attached to a larger sign.

They do not display any markings. Based on their thickness and quality porcelain paint job I am assuming they are a higher quality repop. I have compared them to the new ones that are out there and there is a "night & day" difference.

These reproduction signs are made in both light embossed tin and heavy porcelain like you have. They are small copies of the large porcelain signs that hung in front of dealerships in the 1950s. Available for at least a couple decades and probably still made today. They are made of heavy metal and a nice porcelain job, but they are not the real deal. Any 11 3/4" sign should be treated as seriously suspect until you know for certain.

Let's give the new guy a little advice as to why many of us say "repop" without even looking. Antique, I think you might want to order catalogs from both Vic's and GPH.Both of your signs appear on page 62 of Vic's 08 catalog along with well over 40 more repop/fantasy signs. And that is without going into gas&oil, soda and more.

I'm sure many of us have catalogs going on back.I've got mine since from Vic ran the place and I can assure the product line has changed over time. Also,GPH has some pop stuff that Vic's does,to my knowledge, not handle.AS Jim says,be careful when you see 11 3/4" ,but do your research and don't be afraid to ask. They did make some real gas&oil signs in that size.

WHY bid on these that start at $49+ when you can buy the SAME signs from Don Beaver @ www.vics66.com for $20 & NOT be OVER CHARGED on Postage?

This is why, they ask us about authenticity, we tell him it is no doubt a repro, they don't believe us, and then they list them on ebay as an ORIGINAL, people like this should be banned from oldgas, they do no good for the hobby. IMO whether you like it or not.

Of all things,I thought I might actually be helping a newcomer by showing him how to avoid buying repops in the future by naming a couple of readily available publications.Sadly, not so.

On the optimistic side, perhaps other newcomers with honest concerns and intentions will read this thread and learn.I hope so.

Good point, Maybe this thread should be one of those "sticky's" that are always on top. Make it kind of like an Oldgas "Code of Ethics"

Antiquedigger, Greg or lurker...whatever it is that you are calling yourself this week. Your business ethic and your lack of integrity and an conscience are absolutely shameful.

Unless I can't read anymore,, I can't see anywhere in his description where it says "original", he says used, and it is used,,,that someone who ever that is that might and I say might , because he hasn't sold it yet, might pay $49.97, but I will quarantee you that guy won't know where the $20.00 one is in the world..and he won't be a hard core collector ever..

I guess you can't read:
Type of Advertising: Sign
Original/Reproduction: Original MAKE: Cadillac

You seem to stick up only for the Shady sellers and the reproduction stuff.

everyone who knows that they are reporductions should report the item... maybe with enough reports the "big auction site" might actually act on it?

That is NEVER going to happen.....for so many reasons...Nothing personal, but that's very wishful, naive thinking.

The so called "Shady " sellers, are 1% er's on Ebay,,,, a drop in the bucket so to speak,, 99% good people out there..that's my belief,, of course I am a positive thinking person, NOT negative..:) That is why you think I stick up for the " shady " reproduction sellers,,, because there aren't many of them..and you will NEVER eliminate all of them,, NEVER...
