Why do these Mobiloil signs look so bad, compared to others of the same era ?

I was at a Matthews auctions where one sold for over 300+. He stated before the bidding started when it came up "not sure about thsi one boys, so bid at your own risk" Those nut jobs still went bananas over it! Defenitly a repop.

Many people try to pass these on as originals. I believe when Matthews auctioned that one off they stated age unknown.

There are at least two versions of this sign. I have one that has four mounting holes, 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock. The printing under the word Mobiloil is red and not black and the Gargoyle is better arched and not as sloppy looking as in this example.

How about this one? Two sided with a tab on the bottom. Story is it is for a Gargoyle island cabinet to be used in place of the glass globe? It was rather beat when I got it and I touched it up...mostly the red edge. Looks real to me...any comments. 18" wide.

...I don't think there's any comparison - that one looks like the real deal to me...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...
