You got stock in Aumann or what Bob?

Buy four of five things and it would be cheaper to drive there and pick it up.

There's a "BIG" difference between "Overhead" & "Operating/Business Expenses"

Brian,
Nope, no stock in Aumann.
We do own a couple of small businesses so I know a thing or two about overhead.

I bought two globes from their last auction via proxibid. Drove to Nokomis to pick them up. Spent $45 on gas plus alot of time.

Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros.

Well hell that's a great deal for you then. If a metal body with no lenses is $87.00, you would have been looking at over $200 bones in shipping.

Owned my own business, graduated college with business degree, and still $87.00 is a rip-off.

From Dan Matthews Auctions 6/13/07, I purchased to two Texaco Outboard Motor Oil Cans.

$150.00 1st Can
$140.00 2nd Can (Full)

15% 43.50

Sub Total 333.50
Shipping $14.40

Total $347.90

Price on the package from USPS $9.30

Dan charged me $5.10 to ship it to my door.

I guess Dan never took business 101

Bob,

You are talking about a facility that fulltime employees report to daily. These auctions take place in various places and I am confident, for the packaging piece of the auction, it is done in a cold storage warehouse for a few days or weeks. There are many empty warehouses that short term work takes place at bargain prices. There are other auction houses that will outsource
the work to UPS as someone suggested. These places have done the buyer no favors. They show a disregard to what people must pay to get their items home. They have dumped the liability on the vendor and the vendor knows how to protect themselves from risk. I remember Seth talking about shipping after his auctions
and it is weeks after the auction, I believe he does all of his own packaging giving the buyer the best deal possible.

Dick is right, the squeeky wheel gets the grease. If you don't like it call an auction house and tell them what you think.
Life is full of choices!!!

Mick,
I don't think you have the picture of their set up. They conduct many auctions besides their petroliana sales. Their packaging building is well equipped. I'm sure its heated. Can't say if the guy handling the shipping does that full time or not, but its a big job. I agree $87 is alot. I said that from the start. I doubt seriously that Aumanns are getting rich off shipping though.

Curious if anyone remembers what it cost for packaging and shipping back before Aumanns did it in house.

Doug,
SHHH!!!! Dan's going to read this and realize he's losing money on shipping and raise his prices.
Dan and his son do their packaging.

I recently picked up a globe from Dan. While I was there he showed me a crate they had been given a shipping quote of over $2500. He was shopping for another shipper in the $1500 range but the buyer wasn't even expecting it to cost that much.

Midway Oil had a good idea. The auction houses could post their packaging/handling fees ahead of time. So much per globe plus actual shipping. That would eliminate some potential problems with buyers.....but I'm sure someone would still complain.

I like Midway oil's idea also, it would be nice to know upfront, so you can add it into your bid. Like most people do with the buyers premium. If you knew shipping was going to be $87.00 you might have shaved some off your bid.

I think the solution is real simple......if you don't like the shipping costs, attend the auction in person. I don't like bidding against all those damn internet bidders anyway........the less of them the better, as far as I'm concerned.

(I reserve the right to change this opinion when it comes time for MY collection to be auctioned off!!!)

I will add... i worked at Rolls Royce for 7 years and it was a union shop with a labor rate of $150 and hour. It would take our shipping guy 2 hours to box that globe. LOL Do the math there. LOL

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.
