My pump will be two colors. Is it better to paint while apart or assembled?

I read the jar lid glass has wire mesh/screen. I can't seem to find a close up photo. What kind of mesh/screen and was it on the top of the glass, bottom or in between two panes?

thanks

Referred to as Chicken Wire Imbedded in the glass, not sandwiched between 2 pcs.
An Old glass shop Might have some, if not find a salvage yard for old houses/factories & look in there supply. Then take to a glass shop for cutting.

Before or after primer, re-install panels to base & cylinder casting to make sure NOTHING was warped. After you know everything fits correctly, then disassemble for painting or paint in place.
It's REALLY bad to find out after painting that it doesn't fit together correctly.

SOURCE FOR CHICKEN WIRE GLASS: I'm restoring two G&B T-176's and needed chicken-wire glass for both the jar lids. I searched high & low until finally connected with the guy below. He harvests & re-cycles vintage industrial glass. He cut & shipped me a 6" X 6" square for my T-176 Small-Door and a 7" circle for my T-176 Long-Door. He's pricey but, he has the actual, correct, quarter-inch thick chicken wire glass you'll need. The original glass thickness was called "Quarter Inch Heavy". He has "Quarter Inch Light" but, the difference in thickness almost undetectable. He's a good guy:
