If the partial blue Havoline sign at the top of your photo is the same vintage, then I think you are safe to call the other sign black. IMHO

Also why is the red crisp and NOT faded???
Usually the red is first to fade out...
I have never seen this sign before either BUT Im looking at it now! LOL
I have seen companies use different colors for different states and perhaps thats the case here?(ie mobil, standard, etc)
Just my 2 cents smile Later!
PS: Killer sign JIM!!!

Sorry if I ticked you off, Tom. I was reading your 2nd through 4th sentences. Sorry if I interpreted them wrong. I also realize that paint is different than porcelain. I was just using that as an example of fading paint. I am out of the discussion.

No problem Alex! Im not ticked off...I was just clarifying...
I also remember the faded hoods from the 80's as I was painting cars in a motorpool at that time. I think it was a primer issue?

No problem, Tom. I wish I could remember the details of the Ford suit. I do remember taking my truck to a Ford dealer amd they were shocked when the area rep looked at it and said they would pay to repaint the whole truck and not just replace the hood, etc.

Anyway, wish we could get some more close ups of the Havoline sign.

Its not with me here. I'll see what I can do in the next few days.If I get over there I'll put some Sani-wax on it and take a few more pics. Also I believe there is a sign makers stamp on it..I'll find out.

I've had lots of porcelain signs since I've gotten involved in collecting and really in my opinion the blue usually gets lighter from the wear of acid rain, unless the sign has a film of grime on it from pollution up here in the industrial areas. I'm trying to think of other signs I've seen that were primarily black and cant come up with even one off the top of my head. I wonder why? I think it looks good.

Kieth- My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Palagi would be proud of me for being able to tell the difference between black and cobalt blue. lol I'm trying not to be a smart aleck but I've always subscribe to the "I believe what I see" mentality, and weather it was once blue and has since turned black I dont know, but right now it's definitely black.
