Yes... the cool ones with the huge sunroof and all the windows around the roof. I have had a few. I used to build VW's. I have had lots of cool stuff. Buses were the best, wish I still had one. I am looking for another one ot restore now.
Those windows suck, they are so small. The bad ones are the windshields in early bugs. They are flat and if you are not really gentle they snap while you are pulling the rubber channel through. I had a cool '57 oval window that I broke the first 2 trying to put them in, that was not cheap!
Oh the good old days...
I am looking for another bus if anyone knows of any!

I remember the good old days when gold was worth more than rust!

Those buses are hard to find now, covered in rust too. My last one was a 1965 that I pulled out from under an Oak tree in So Cal. Original owner, sat for 20 years. No rust any where, no dents, original paint, etc. The only rust it had was inside the back cargo floor area, none in the bottom pan. (microbuses have an extra pan that covers the underside, combi and panels do not have that) I asked the guy how rust got only in the inside floor, seemed odd to me. He said he used to have ponies, to move them around he would open the sunroof and load them in. Can you imagine seeing that? A deluxe microbus cruising along with a ponie sticking its head out of the rag top! I guess the ponies would pee in the bus, hence the rust only on the inside floor.
I wish I still had that bus, when I pulled it up with the tow truck it was like a rat party, the whole engivne comparment was full of leaves they had brought in. (I mean FULL)
That bus, like all the other ones I had is in Japan now. I sold some pumps to a guy from Finland not long ago. I delivered them to the shipping company for him. There were a couple buses there and even one deluxe micro. (old caddys too) They were all sitting out on a lot, waiting to get loaded into shipping containers and sent over-seas. (oh well... there is one less tok 300 in the states, lol)
I have a ton of old VW toys and old print ads for them. Those are a riot, they did great ads in the 60's. I even have some old VW stuff with the nazi symbols on them and written in German.

Well we sure stomped the GL*** outa this thread!!

This is reminding me of the Fab Furry Freak Bros..LOL.. I am sure Don S can tell us tales of Low-Speed Microbus chases, smoke pouring outa the front of the bus, and we are not talking about the engine!!

Anyone got pics they can post of what they looked like in the 70's..Now that would be Funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...dodogas

Years ago I had a windshield put in a 62 ford. A guy that worked at a salvage yard installed it. He used brake fluid. The glass really popped in!!

Brake fluid can eat up some kinds of paint. Be careful with that stuff.

Use the string method, this is what Tokheim shows in their 39 and 300 manuals.
Incidentally back in the 1970s I had a VW parts store and repair shop. I used the string method on every windshield I ever put in and never broke one, even the curved windshields.
By the way I still have a 1970 Karmann Ghia Convertible and my wife says SELL IT, anyone interested?

you guys are all trying too hard. buy two case of bud (not that light stuff) take the pump and glass to an auto glass shop. drink one beer. by that time that skinny kid who does this every hour of his waking day will have the glass in with no scratches. check his id. if he is of legal age, give him the rest of the beer, and by the time he has uttered the word "cool" for the ninth time, you'll be rolling home, on the cell phone, telling dwaine and the other oilies on your cell phone you now know how to put in the damn glass.
jumping on the pump skins with steel toed boots is strongly discouraged. we'll talk about high heels in a later installation.

I recently put glass in a Wayne 505. Looking around for the right tool to use, I found my wife's plastic orange peeler [yup, it's orange too] in the knife drawer. It is tapered to a wedge on one end and doesn't scratch the paint. That thing is stayin out in the garage too.

I have to add my two cents. I vote for the string method. Some of my Toks still have the glass install instructions pasted on the inside of the door. You know those farm fresh pumps.
As far as the VW topic I was a professional VW engine rebuilder for a number of years. No offense but,I hope to never work on another VW again. I prefer working on Honda/Acura autos. But I most agree those micro buses were pretty cool .

Happy Pumping Rob
