...tetraethyl is older, antiknock is from the 60's, I believe...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Ken,
Tetraethyl Lead (TEL)is the name of the compound, the Antiknock value (Octane rating) is the measure of how effective the TEL works with the gasoline.
With this in mind it would seem that Antiknock is as old as TEL.
Hope this helps.

Ken:

...while Ed is technically correct regarding the reasons for using the terms and what they mean, I disagree with his assertion that the signs are the same age...

...just about the only place I've seen the 'antiknock' version is on the mostly stainless short Gulf pumps of the 60's...I've NEVER seen one of those pumps (unrestored) with the older variation...

...I've got quite a few variations of Lead signs...all of my old NOS lead signs (that go back well before 1942) say 'Tetraethyl'...

...the 'Antiknock' signs are much lighter, with less 'shelving' of the porcelain than the 'Tetraethyl' signs...

...that's my argument! Good luck!

Ken,
Gulfiend is correct, I was referring to the use of the term "antiknock" and NOT its use on signs. Sorry for the confusion.
