I have two porcelain signs, the round is about 25 years old and a repop. It is of heavy porcelain! The can is very nice and collectable from the 1940's. The shield is steel and laser cut and painted, its unique. $50 for all $8 for shipping. No disappointments. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'm curious, can someone clarify that the can shaped sign IS from the 1940's, or is it a newer sign in the design of a 1940's can? I would just like to know for future reference as $50 for the lot would have seemed EXTREMELY cheap for an original 40's Harley item, of any sort, lol, let alone a porcelain or tin sign! Darin

...it's a new sign, loosely patterned after a 1940's can...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Back nearly 25 years ago I bought this, my first porcelain sign from a machinist who worked at the university with me. He collected vintage signs, pressed steel toys and firearms. He died at 88 and sadly left so much behind for an estate sale. At the time he told me the sign was authentic and he never sold but he knew I liked it as a tribute to my Harley, he let me have it. I paid $35 then. Now if the new owner can research it and shed more light on it that would be great. I come across items I wish to sell and put them out there as little profit to me but the enjoyment comes as I see people jump on them for the pleasure of there collection. Yes it was a great deal and unlike so many of the jaw dropping asking prices on this site, I enjoy keeping things at a working mans price. Im a giver not a taker. Wait till I post some of my vintage metal full qt. oil cans. Affordably priced of course. Have a good one. Roger

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HARLEY-OIL-CAN-PORCELAIN-METAL-SIGN-NR-/370618910805http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-HARLEY-DAVIDSON-OIL-HEAVY-METAL-TIN-SIGN-NR-/120927334607...the next two were 'aged': http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=130689877315http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=300710513946...the last auction says something about them being 'sold in the dealerships'...I suppose if Harley offered them for sale, they'd technically be 'authentic' - but they're not from the 1940's... ...the giveaway for me is the crude artwork...the top was taken from another oil can advertisement, and the rest was set on a computer...back in the 1940's, if such a sign would have been produced (and for what application, I can't imagine, but that's another point entirely) it would have been created using a photograph of a can and the lettering would follow the perspective of the can naturally...not like on this one...

Harley does offer porcelain coated signs, but haven't seen any like these. The last time I went into the local dealer they were only the street sign style signs.

I figured these would spur a disagreement from someone, but just decided I would not start it. Definitely not the real deal. To Rogers credit priced to reflect that. Harley Davidson was very cautious as to how they allowed their logos to be used. Sorry to say not so much now compared to the 1940. But copy cat signage is such big business they would spend billons putting the brakes on everyone.
