I've seen Cities Service ads from the late 50s/early 60s using the same phrase. I think it started with the soda makers once they (other than Pepsi) started making 10+ oz. bottles. But it's pretty silly for gas. What were they going to do--sell Imperial Gallons?

Since the "Crown " was a prominent feature , the King Size Crown would certainly make sense in the Standard Oil Indiana areas. Remember , they had Red Crown regular and White Crown Premium .

And, let's not forget the more wide spread marketing and use of "King Size" cigarettes that was going on in the late 1940's and early 1950's. John
