I just a acquired a Erie 743 that is complete with all the original DX ad glass and everything. I want to open it up to gut it. I don't have the key and there's no number on the lock.

Did they make a "master key" for these pumps?

And if so does anyone have a copy I could buy?

I really hate to drill the lock, but I will if necessary. I'm not loading this thing up again to take it to a locksmith!

PS I need a key for my Wayne 605 double to if someone has one that will work.

can you tip it and reach up thru the base? If so you may be able to disassemble the latch. Then you could take just the lock to a locksmith.

Otherwise, I bet the lock would be pretty easy to pick...

Locks are only $5 - $6.00 at Lowe's or any hardware. No one will know if it has been replaced.

IMHO - Save yourself a bunch of time and hassle and drill it out.

Thanks for the replies! I'll probably just drill it out and buy another lock.

But I am still curious did they make a "Master Keys" for some gas pumps?

YES, Tokheim used the same key for YEARS. A TPX key

I think they made masters for service work..

I have some somewhere.. about 3 different brands with the company name on a tag.

Now they could be individual keys for pumps, but I got them with about a few hundred porcelain gas and oil tags and brass tags for lubesters etc..

I wondered and posted a similar question awhile back when trying to get in a Wayne 70. (still have not) Went through a batch of old Wayne service keys but could not get it open, now have access to more and will try again...not that that's whats holding up work on it.

For Tokheim, to this day we have/sell/use TPX keys and locks. I'd rather have the original open then drill the lock and have it be one of the few things on a pump not original. They were not so much master as just all the same. The next vintage Tok pump doors on MPD & electronic models were all TPX83.

Regarding the Erie 743, on the one I have the lock mech. is not engaged but the lock is in the locked position, the doors just lifted straight up and off with MUCH EFFORT until I adjusted them. Make sure they are not just painted on and stuck. Don't have a key for it.

find a pump service they may be able to cut a key from an old one... . Anniston Pump Shop in Anniston Al. has been around a long time they may be able to help.Some times you can pick those locks with a serrated steak knife, that is pointed and a lot of wiggling......the knife that is.... Joe

Tokheim: I would like to buy one of the Tokheim master keys from you if they're fairly cheap. I have bought a Tok 39 short pump. (I don't have it home yet though) It will be my first Tokheim pump. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the key lock style doors. I believe it does have a small access door you could lock with a padlock though. It I believe is the early version of short 39 with the cast window frames. But I'm sure eventually I'll run onto to a pump and need that master key. What do you know about the wayne pumps my 605 duo is locked on one side. I would like to open it up to gut it. It's very very heavy!!!

Dodogas what brands are your three keys for?

Do you have any pumps to try your keys on?

If they work as "master keys" I would be interested in buying a copy of them.

(except if one is a Tokhiem TPX key)

My father-in-law is a locksmith. He says most locksmiths should be able to come to your location, same as if you were locked out of your house or car. He said they would try to make an "impression", by putting in a key blank, and turning it slightly to mark the pins, then try to cut a key from that. If that failed.....they would drill it like T-Way said.

Oldgto: Yeah that's a good idea, but I live out in the country. A locksmith would probably charge 20-50 dollars just to drive out here. If I could acquire most of the common manufacturers master keys like Wayne, Gilbarco, Tokhiem, etc. Then when I run onto a locked pump I'll have a key for it. That's my plan in theory.


By the way I find your username Oldgto very interesting. I have a 67 GTO that's a numbers matching 78,XXX miles, HO, AC, PS, PB, car. I bought it off the original owner last October. It spent most of it's life in sunny Arizona. It's the second GTO I've had. I won't ever sell this one if I can help it.

Do you have a GTO?

Philip, I cant get into where tey are to loook right now. I am not sure what they were, but it was 3 brands, one was an odd one like AO Smith or something.

I only have some Bowsers and a Bennett to try them on.

Would there not have to be a special notch or something on a master to make it work on all locks? Some way to tell if it is a master or regular key?.. maybe that would be too easy..maybe a lack of a notch??

When I was striping pumps for parts (I had over 200 pumps at one time) I found that most locks had been drilled out so anything would open them, even a screw driver.

Yes, Philip, I have a 66 GTO and a 69 Grand Prix. This is my 3rd goat. I had a 66, 389 4 speed when I was younger, then had a 67 years later. This 66 my wife & I tore down to the frame & rebuilt over 5 years. It has a later 400 in it.....but a "correct" 389 WS (tri-power) block sits under the bench awaiting a re-build. Killer car and garage! I love how you did it all. Your car has a great color combo. Mine was originally Montego Cream with a black vinyl top and gold interior. The original owner had it painted it's one and only time to a bright red color (about 14 years ago) with no vinyl top. He had plans to change the interior to black, but he never got around to it. (Thankfully) I plan on changing it back to how it is supposed to be. I love the original color scheme alot so I can't wait to get it changed back!

These nice old goats are getting pretty hard to find unless you have very deep pockets. I don't see to many GTO's driving around Oklahoma anymore, every once in a while.

I fiddled around the Erie and found that the doors slid up and off when pryed up from the bottom. Upon further inspection I found the lock actuator bars are missing. So I won't have to even drill out the lock after all. I also found a rather large snake skin shed towards the top of the pump! Yikes!!

Thunder II: I had read that post previously and it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the skin. Strangely enough I didn't even think about a snake when I was loading it up. I will on the next pump though. LOL
