I missed the new show, but there is something I would like to say about these shows in general. I love American Pickers itself. Although I would like to see more good picking and less BS. This last week I had to watch the guys go to Subway!! I know the show has to make money, but that's some serious selling out. And that's another subject. See I am new to oil and gas and I am so seriously hooked (read addicted). The problem is, since I am new, I am at the buying stage of the hobby and I feel as if I am buying at a peak in pricing. And any more shows are just going to make that worse. If they want to make more shows, make more American Pickers. Can you imagine how much tape ends up on the cutting room floor. BTW, what happened to the show with the two picking sisters? I think I saw one part of one episode.

Before feathers get ruffled and feelings get hurt (there are some strong feelings about the American Pickers show on here) could someone better than I at working the search engine find that last thread where the show was discussed that includes people asked to be on it?
Newbies, it's a little bit of a shocker...
Nicole p.s. who actually saw her first visible on that show, so at the very least, it has introduced folks to petroliana.

The picking sisters sucked! They didn't even pick. They made modern art from old *****. Has nothing to do with picking.
As for the new show, I have been ob vacation and have missed it. I will have to YouTube the episode and get back to you.

The appraisers ruined it for me. I realize condition is everything but they kept saying that on almost everything they bought...sometimes something rusty or with patina can be neat and have value. I guess I was expecting a little more out of the show...I don't see it lasting that long

...I hope this genre of television burns out and disappears completely...shows like these have no redeeming value whatsoever, period... ...the producers are only trying to create content and fill airtime, not in truth or accuracy...exhibit #1: from 'Pawn Stars', where Rick (who would later get his own show, 'Rick's Restorations') tells everyone how he 'restored' a scrap-worthy Vendo Coca-Cola machine...but the 'restored' machine he wheels out is a Cavalier...for those who don't know much about Coke machines: that's like 'restoring' a Ford into a Chevy...see the screen grab below, exactly as it was presented on 'Pawn Stars'...this is how little the producers of these shows think of their viewers' intelligence: ...the only things on the shows that are real are the items...the situations in which they are 'found', what they are 'bought' for, what they 'sell' for are completely contrived...that means it's all made up...a lie... ...maybe there was a time that those 'American Peckers' actually made a living driving around getting the country getting their hands dirty - but it wasn't anything like what's being presented as 'reality' on that show... ...better to spend your time doing actual research, if you want to learn about the history of the oil companies - or what items are rare or otherwise desirable, and what they sell for in the real world...

I watched the episode with hope of seeing whether it was going to be honest about itself or not.
The pickers on this episode are authentic, I've actually seen some of them before at local markets. And pitting them against one another at the same locations resulted in what I expected.
The host and the "appraisers" on the other hand are sell outs. Their appraisals in the first round were OK. But the second round I knew would be the tell.
They over appraised the video machine and the coke machine more than double. Neither machine was in great condition(a criteria the appraisers said was very important) nor shown to actually work correctly. Serious collectors of either of the machines in those conditions would be in the $275-400 range max.
The other ridiculousness is the "time limit" for showing back up at a taping location, hell it's a recorded show you'll spend days editing, quit the *****! I've seen far better shows done on local access TV & Public TV pitting teams of non-pickers against one another.
I predict the show will only be on a short run based on the pretty faced appraisers performance.

FWIW... ebay auction 150847632660 for a Frick guage in nice shape.
The Winner machine doesn't turn up easily as a worthy machine to collect in the coin op world. Pong is a far better machine to collect with value going forward.

...the topic of these shows comes up periodically on Oldgas...a lot of people think these shows are honest and genuine...if you're fine with that kind of fraud - well, it's a free country...I don't see any redeeming value in those kind of shows; quite the contrary, I think they're a detriment to the hobby, for the reasons I've stated...
...I'll post the same reply (and picture) the next time it comes up...

Dick that wasnt really the same coyote. I was told that they used new coyotes whenever one would die. One of the "Coca-Cola aficionados Brooks and Brady" claimed the 25.00 tray they found was worth up to 500.00. or something like that. Hell, they might be right- its already up to 70.00 in that auction. I turned it off halfway through.

Thunder, I agree, but.....I had hoped there was some degree of truth to these shows, but I was at a guys place a few months back and they had filmed a pickers show at his place. He said all agreements on price and what items could be purchased were agreed upon out of New York, and the check came out of Canada. He had to tell their "expert" what value the item had and details about it. They placed his items so it would look more jumbled and disorderly before the pickers showed up.Now thats reality TV!

It is TV-it's staged, scripted, and sliced and diced whichever way and to whatever degree a producer deems necessary in order to make it attractive to the average *****. When it stops doing that, it will be dropped and something equally ridiculous will take its place...and on and on and on.

I am so happy now that I finally gave up on the "reality" shows. I don't care what kind it is: storage units, picking, gunsmithing, dating, cooking, whatever. They don't even seem to hide how much they're scripted and formulated anymore. With every new one I keep thinking, "ok, this is the '59 Caddy" (my term for so over the top it ends the fad), but it just makes the next one even more ridiculous trying to top it.

That coke tray is in every antique store in America. And when you go back next time, it will still be there. I havent seen the show, but I received about 10 text messages during it from people I know. Only thing I could tell them was that my reality is rigged.
