looks like a decal. An off center one at that. I wouldn't buy.

So lets say a mobil station owner in 1961 takes an old clock he has and he rebuilds it and put a pegasus sticker on it and he does his best to make it nice for his station. Then we buy it 50 years later, are we buying a fake?

I thought this looked hokey also!!! But just like others I've seen. I still kinda like it. I guess just depends on the price.

I found this one on an old auction listing. It claimed to be real.

Notice the thickness of the red ring and the distance from the front hoof to the red ring. Hmm....

If such a clock was made by Mobil it would have licensed by or Pat. Pending on it....

As to your first question, if you placed a decal on a clock would it make the clock an original Mobil clock? Of course the answer is no... So why would it be different if a Gas Station Owner did it?

Also if a Station Owner was going to place a decal on a clock in '61, they would have been using the "new" Mobil logo not the retired one..... I worked in a small Flying A Station, a little "Hole in the Wall"... We made such clocks and signs.... Corporate made us remove them from the Station... If it wasn't from Corporate, then it didn't belong in the Station.... Imagine was the "big deal" in the late 50s through the mid 70s.. The Oil Company's wanted the Customer to feel right at home where-ever they traveled in the US... So each station was to look as close as possible to the next one down the road and to the station the Customer used in their "Home Town" and/or "Community"...

IMO there is no difference if the station owner in '61 did it or I did it yesterday-

I believe there is a genuine PAM clock in a similar design to the one in question. I will research it tonight and post when I'm not at work.
The one in question on Ebay is not an original though.

There is an original Pam clock pictured in Wayne and Scott's "Mobil Collector's and Price Guide" on page 122. I will not picture it due to copyright laws, but is a similar design to the ones posted here. I would guess a guy would have to do an in hand inspection and come to their own conclusion on authenticity of one of these.
A clock is the only Mobil item I've been burned on personally, so I've not been in the market since and as such do not pay much attention to them when they do come up for sale. Definately an item where repros have ruined it for me!

I was looking at the Ebay clock for differences and noticed that the one pictured in the book does NOT have the second sweep hand. I don't know if this helps any, but it could be a clue on original vs. repro. for someone looking someday. (I also understand motors/hands may be replaced in the lifetime of a clock, so it can't be a benchmark on authenticity.)
Also on the original, the Pam info at the bottom is bold and the same darker red as the rest of the clock. The repro on Ebay looks to be a finer font and a lighter red print on the Pam info at the bottom so 57tbird is right that repro Pam faces definately exist for this clock.
