why does the word mileage look so weird, did you have enough from the other side to show that's the way it was? I think its supposed to look like its carved in the tree.

I like the restoration, especially keeping the original condition on the one side.
I would say the "Mileage" condition is due more to a difficulty in reproducing exact fonts and letter sizing, if it was supposed to be carved I would have expected the whole phrase to be in that font as well instead of part of one word.
Represented correctly the value of the sign is increased from the unrestored value. It just won't be nearly the same as a better condition sign.
Collecting anything keeps you young at heart!

Chiming in late here..all the letters of 'made for mileage' are different to look like carving.
