I heavily attribute it to all these "picker","pawn Shop" & "market warrior" type shows on cable and public TV today.
Yes,they are scripted and over priced & exaggerated as we all know, but they are also putting Americana items in the spotlight.
As we all know, once any of us identify ourselves as passionate about Gas & Oil items, family, friends & strangers around us bring up one of those shows as reference..."Hey,did you see that show where they"...I mean even Grandparents & teenagers are talking about Americana & Gas & Oil,that I'm seeing.

I'm seeing similar "antique" items being noticed by more & more people today, and their prices too seem to be holding steady or increasing, compared to 3-4 years ago.

How often does one come up? I paid more than the book price 5 + years ago. It just depends on the seller I guess at this point???

I know ours were selling faster than we could take them off the trailers at IG. It was a little crazy for a while. We might have been a little behind on the pricing curve as we priced them the same as we did in the past.

At the new show at Maggie Valley, NC -

I sold 2 1950's fixer pumps (wayne/Gillbarco) needing parts and complete restoration, $300 and $350. I've noticed more G&O people buying fixers as the general public are buying pumps once thought over priced. All the fixers but 1 on the field went fast, the originals got plenty of offers, the improperly restored (repop globes, color mismatches, etc) didn't move but that may have been do to the limited attendance more than anything.

I've bought 2 electrics under 250.00 recently. A Gilbarco 904 that was super super clean for $175 and a restored Erie 700 for $250. Last week I bought 2 Bennett 646 BA pumps for $1000 each but they are super nice originals and an awesome looking original W-70 for a grand. Just this past week I bought 4 more at decent prices. Gilbarco 96C that's freshly painted for $600, a Toke 39 freshly painted for $500, a super super clean Toke 36B for $500, and a nice original Bennett 543-F for an even grand. There are still deals out there but you gotta be prepared to jump on them and drive to get them or somebody else will.

It was too good to refuse Craig. Made him an offer that he accepted so I drove down Thursday and loaded all of it up. He bought me dinner too so obviously he was happy with the offer. smile

Even when you can find the deals, it's getting more expensive to drive a long ways to get them. I didn't mention that this most recent haul was still another 1200.00 in fuel and expenses by the time I drove to pick them up and bring them back. Gotta factor in your costs, and your time is worth something too. Even if your shipping a pump, it still adds up.

I think they're definitely starting to climb in value and before you know it they'll average 1500.00 a pump for anything half decent, and 3500 plus for a restored electric pump. A guy can get 1200.00 to 1500.00 for a pump here now if it's complete and not rusted out.

Keith ,
How is your inventory holding up? Do you think you will be able to continue to suppy good originals or do you think the supply in your area will be dipleated soon?

Graeme, our Canadian gas pump market is definitely a little different then the US. Much more difficult to find clean pumps locally.

When determining the value of pumps locally you have to factor in all the costs involved in finding them, transporting, storing them and not to mention time and effort. Something else that you didn't mention is the US exchange rate when purchasing US money and the 12% taxes we (in BC HST is 12%) pay at the border.

In 2005-2006 I bought 150 gas pumps out of WA, USA. Exchange rate was 15% and the taxes (PST & GST) were another 13% on top of that. I moved 22 gas pumps at a time as I figured that was 10,000lbs per load. made seven trips that's a lot of fuel money and depreciation on truck & trailer.

In light of the foregoing; I agree that our local economies can justify $1200-$1500.00 price range per unrestored pump. I sell restored short electric's for $3500.00.

The stronger prices come as no surprise to me, as it is what I anticipated. Why else would I have over 240 pumps hoarded away. All I can say is that, I hope the prices keep on rising.
