Not all of the repops are 11 3/4. And he could be measuring it with that bend in it?

sellers completed items have several of the Texaco, plus a gulf and another, similarly shaped, and other beatup signs that sold.

Must have the same mold for that pretty severe bend thats in those signs

There's a nice little Antique Backroads article written by Jody Major and Dan Matthews about identifying repops. You can subscribe for free.

When you put that much curve in a small sign, your going to have Hair Line Cracks in face porcelain. Straighten it back flat & porcelain will pop off.

SC62, IF you buy one of those signs Please tell all of us what it fits on.
Get catalogs from all the Re-pop vendors so you know what is available in repop's.

Tom, way to stay on topic wink.

The Red Crown. If you would put some effort in to learning to read, you would see that since joining the site I've talked to enough guys to learn that it may have been a repo, and have enough doubt I'd never buy or sell another sign like that or similar again.

Funny that the Mobil sign I asked someone on here about and told me it was most likely an authentic version of the one that is commonly repro'd. I sold that one right before I joined the site, and when I learned it had been reproduced and I couldn't be 100% positive I offered the seller her money back, she refused.

Both of those signs I did not know enough about at the time to buy or to sell. Since joining and talking to a wide variety of new people, I've learned to bury my nose is books/catalogs before doing anything else.

I actually edited this to take out my insulting response even though you apparently have no regard for me.

People with a mentality like yours are ruining this hobby. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they first start. It's not like I'm sitting here reveling in the fact that I may or may not have sold an unauthentic sign. I could understand the problem if I was constantly polluting the hobby with garbage, but I haven't and I won't.

I'll tell you just like I tell everyone, view my history. You had to go through probably 50 other unquestionably authentic signs to find 2 of my early pieces. 1 of which may have been a repro, the other someone from this site told me after I sold it it may have been 50/50. I offered the buyer her money back because I was unsure, she refused. End of story.

As I said, guys like you are killing this for new collectors, or trying to anyways if I didn't love this hobby, I'd give up the days I spend each month trying to find pieces to add to my collection, and sell and trade, and instead of making a minimal or decent profit margin on signs I'd go spend a couple of hours buying from Vicks and beating on ***** with a hammer and makes hundreds instead of twenties.

I mean, why try to stay honest, why try to help out your fellow man, and point stuff out if all anyone is gonna do is harp on something I have already said I've learned about? If all I'm going to do is get harassed it's worth it not to waste my time and money trying to be part of an excellent tradition. Do you or anyone else who is just completely "holier than thou" think you are driving people to pollute this hobby or abandon it all together? I try to bring people in, not push them out.

Just don't get it.

Early? It was 2 or 3 weeks ago.... im a "new" collector. And in fact younger than you. I know whats fake and not by reading and reading... i dont just talk about it. Just because you realized you made a mistake doesn't make it right.. you should refund their money and make it right. Tell them it IS fake... not might be. Ive been burned on this site by veterans many times and it didn't ruin the hobby for me. Its about having fun, buying what you like and not about money.

Just a few observations based on this thread and another few threads with the similar underlying overtones with respect to these two signs in question.

Eddy, don't shoot the messenger. Beating around the bush ain't going to change history. It's a fact that those two signs are reproductions. I think you are aware of that, but are afraid to admit it. If it was an honest mistake, without any intent to knowingly defraud someone of their hard earned cash. Then, that's what it is. The sooner you accept that, and admit to yourself what the rest of us know...is when the process of rebuilding your credibility with those that you have lost it can begin.

I think failing to admit to the oblivious will only fuel the situation and contempt that is directed towards you with respect to the issue of the authenticity of those signs. We have all made mistakes, and we will all make mistakes in the future. What sets the men apart from the boys is admitting to it and shouldering all responsibility. It's not making mistakes that gets people in trouble but rather the process of covering up or denying events that gets people in trouble. There is only one way to put this issue to rest......

Enough said by me.

Dave, I wish more people on the site shared your level of intelligence and just overall composure.

I, perhaps unfortunately, don't care about contempt, especially when something so ridiculous fuels it. As you have said, people keep bringing up old news in every thread possible. This is after I have said I have learned so much since joining this site and have pointed out my selling record obviously proves I am not in the business of fraud.

As you said, we'll all make mistakes in the future, and I hope those who have continually harassed me find the same response in their future. I suppose I bring some of it on myself by not just shutting my mouth and taking it, but I have never nor will I ever stand by and let people run their mouth.

I find it sad it does seem to pop up continuously, even in a thread trying to help people avoid making mistakes as well.

I do not care about my credibility with the people on here who run their mouth carelessly. I am however grateful for people like you and others who have taken the time to help me learn I do think people like you are capable of seeing I'm someone who has learned, but has moved on and deals in legitimate items.

So again I thank you.

Dave has made some good points and said it in a better way than most of us have tried to do, You should read it again and read it slowly. It is ALL about credibility.

I was taught to take the cotton out of my ears and put it in my mouth. Some times I do, sometimes I dont when I should. Also "you cant get twenty years of experiance in twenty weeks". Sometimes I think it applies to everybody else but me. Just sayin.
Also to add another one my Gramma used to say, "It all comes out in the wash!".
