I just picked up a 42" procelain Texaco sign at an auction. The sign has some large spots where the porcelain is missing. Was wondering if anyone has any advice on restoration? Who is most reliable? Is it worth the cost?

Thanks,
Clayton

Most people don't like signs that have been touched up.

If you are doing it for resale.. I wouldn't..

That's my 2 cents

You can never match the original color exactly, unless you are a color matching genius!

Here's a site I have heard about and they show repaired ones.

IMO, I would never purchase a restored sign or have one repaired that I own. Why ruin the stories of it's lifetime!

Thanks
Mike

How are you going to enjoy that sign the most, restored or unrestored? That's all that should matter. It's your sign, do with it as you please. It's the privilege of ownership!

Sign restoration fees aint cheap. If the sign is rare it might be worth restoring.

Leave it as is. Save yourself some money and it will be much easier to sell down the road.

I like Dave's comment, see below. Dave usually has a good insight and good comments that make sense.
My take is, if it's a rare sign and you plan to keep and enjoy it then restortion is ok but on a more common piece no. Enjoy the piece whichever way you go

You might want to think about where you are going to display it;inside or outside. If the answer is outside,I wouldn't hesitate to do some minor touch-up on it to stop further deterioration and rust streaks from exposed metal.

I do it on my 6' big signs on display outside because I got tired of cleaning them up,and I live in a desert. The key word there is "minor".Without a pic showing damage I'm just giving you something to consider. Also, which 42" sign is it?The value changes a lot depending on which sign you have.

Thanks to all for advice! I am leaning towards leaving the sign as is. Attached a photo here, you can see a large area at top with missing paint. Sign still displays well.

Thanks again,
Clayton

On that one Clayton,I would leave it as is if it were mine. That is a more common version than some others and the damage to the top is not,IMO,minor.

If the top was good,I would have touched-up the rest of it if it was going outside. As noted,it is your sign;do as you wish.
