Hello All,
Has anyone found an off the rack touch up paint match to the deep cobalt blue found on multiple brands of signs? I need some for some pecks on my White Star Mobilgas shield. This is an "earlier" shade of blue, the sign is dated 1934 and also matches the blue on my Red Crown thermometer. I've tried the usual spots, like the auto parts stores and chain store touch up paint sections, but any of the colors that have been remotely close are metallics which obviously still aren't the correct match. It's also a bit tough to drag a heavy sign around with me to try and do an electronic color match!
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,
Darin

Some colours are pretty much impossible to match with paint due to the transluscent nature of the porcelain sign making process. The blue gets part of it's colour from the colour below it. You can't match Coca-Cola red because of the yellow showing through the red top colour.

I realize this doesn't help, sorry.

One Shot sign paint has a few shades of blue you might be able to mix to get close.

I have used the white underneath of the blue and have come pretty close with just a brush. Spraying would be the way to go though.

Thanks guys....It helps with the knowledge of having the white base coat. Maybe that's why what I have used looks off as it's mixing with the surface rust and not showing the true shade. Thanks for the tip, I think I'll try again.

From what I have seen, sign restorers Repaint the Entire sign after filling in w/ Bondo or what ever to get the shelving effect..

Try some scrap metal first, painting it and when dry, holding it side by side to the piece you want to match, as some types of paints dry darker. You can also play with undercolors as well this way...

"deep" cobalt blue may be a mixture of Ultramarine blue (more transparent) over the cobalt--at least if you are refering to artists pigments.

seems like no two cobalt blues are the same - and they are all difficult to match. Trial and error is only way you will get there - nothing "off the shelf" is going to do it. Even custom mixing to match is tough - as mentioned above... Good luck.

There is an old hobby shop by me that has a REAL lot of Testors model paints. It gets me close and then I mix and match.

Good tip by Nicole! Always try to remember the paint will dry a bit darker. Forgot about that. It's been a while. smile
