I apologize in advance as I'm sure this has been discussed, but I couldn't find anything. I will be putting a bunch of oil cans on ebay this week and some of them are full. I was concerned about them leaking and having it come back to bite me with ups.I was thinking about emptying them first. These are low end cans worth 10-20 bucks ea. If they were high end I would definately leave them full. Any thoughts or link to previous discussion would be appreciated. Tom

An empty one ships for around $5, while a full one is closer to $10. I think USPS is about the cheapest on cans. Just get the right size box.

If they are all metal 1 qt's Just put the full ones in a 1 gal zip lock bag. Will contain any leakage that may occur. If composite cans empty them. I've shipped many this way never had an issue.

USPS does seem to be the cheapest. They also have a priority mail box that measures about 6x6x6 or so and works good for single cans. For muliple cans up to 4 cans I use a medium flat rate box at 11.35. Almost the same price as shipping 1 full can. Put in a baggie to control leaks as mentioned before.

Please post a picture of how you fit 4 quarts in a Medium Flat Rate Box. I can only manage two.

When I drain a can that I intend to keep, I use a sharp round punch and put 2 holes in the bottom, right next to the edge. After draining for a day, I wipe them down good and maybe swish a little gasoline around inside to get the last of the oil, and then after drying, I use some clear silicone to seal the 2 small punctures so as not to leak. Works great!

..and for the love of God,DON'T write FRAGILE on it.
That's an insult to the handler to treat it special over all the other packages.

I don't have a picture right now but if I have 4 cans I stand them up. Each can is wrapped in small bubble wrap or something to that effect. Layer of bubble wrap in the bottom of the box and then the cans go in with peanuts around the outside edges with a layer of small bubble wrap on top. I have never had a problem with this method and I have shipped a number this way. If they are full cans and if the PO gets really rough with them or drops the box I am sure there would be an issue. If I was shipping full expensive cans I would cut it down to 2 in a medium flat rate box if the cans were full.
