In the 40's, Union started useing porcilin signs. The spelling was a ADV ploy like Gasoline/Gasolene. I have gone to the Union Oil Museum here in Santa Paula, and they have no answers.

Union used several pump signs with the word
Diesol on them. They were a blue sign with
white Union across the top, white outlined
orange Diesol across the center and white Diesel Fuel across the bottom. This version came in 10" and 11.5" sizes. There was also a version that had the added words "G.M." to the Diesol logo. This version came in the 11.5" size. The signs were produced in the 50s and 60s and are more difficult to find than some of the more common round Union signs but they do come up for sale.

Thanks for your reply. The sign I have measures 24"x30", two sided. It has holes only on the top for mounting, or since it's two sided it would probably hang.Any guess how old it is now? Frank

Frank,

It's hard to put a value on something that hasn't sold recently. Your best bet is to find similar signs from other comparable oil companies ( one of the Standard companies for example )to use as a guide.

Remember rarity doesn't always equate to a higher value. A common, but graphic sign from any company will command a higher price than a rare sign that is very plain. Your sign sounds kind of plain, but it has good color and that should help.

Here in the mid-west Union items are a tough sell. I would GUESS that your sign would bring $250 - $400 at a swap meet here. Out west might be a different story.

Asking prices are pretty meaningless too. What you're after are selling prices.

Bob
