I have this old can from the early teens and was wondering if any one knew much about it. I have seen lots of oil cans but not this one thanks.

According to "Check The Oil" book of 1986, this can is circ. 1927 and est. value THEN [1986] was $375. Don't see them offered for sale too often, or in this condition. GOOD LUCK db

There was a nice one in the Iowa Gas auction back in '95 or '96 that sold for around $2000 including the buyers premium.
A few years later there was another one in the Iowa Gas auction that wasn't as good. That one sold for less than $100.
There have been a few of them offered on ebay. I don't recall what they sold for or if they even met reserve.
Although I didn't see them, I've been told that four N.O.S. cans like this sold in the past 6 or 8 years in the $800 each range.
Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros. http://www.lastgas15.com/

I sure hope my Dad get's what he wants for his cans. He has had them for over 35 years. They came out of an old Dodge/Chevy dealer Iowa. He is pushing 80 and I actually feel like I am selling one of his best friends. But like he said he has enjoyed them all these years and it's time too pass them on.

Looking at this auction, I don't know, something just doen't smell right to me. I could be and hope that I am wrong, but seems like someone or someones are trying to pull something. Why blockout the bidders ID, maybe because there are no real bidders, only the owner of the can or his friends who are trying to drive up the price. Like I said I hope I'm wrong because if I'm not this will be another black eye that people new to our collecting will point to. I understand a reserve, but I have seen people drive up the price on an item to see if the newcomer will jump at an item he thinks is a "one-of-a-kind". More often than not we lose a new collector. Hope I'm just talking through my hat. Bob

Any of you heavy hitters on cans or marathon care to comment on the value hear? This is a whole lot of dough for a can...
His other auction is for another great can but the auction is not private? Why not?

I am new to ebay i buy a few thing but that was the frist time i have tried to sell. My thinking was with a can this rare the people bidding on it might not want their idenity known. If i knew a little more about ebay before i put the Opaline can on it too would have been private. As far as "my friends" running up the price your wrong my friend if you can't afford it don't bid. From the post it sounds like i am trying to cheat someone If someone does wins this can they will be very satisfied. And guess what no one will know who win except me the winner. If that person wants his idenity know then he can come on here and tell you himself that would be his buisness. And yes I have a high reserve on the can. I am selling it for my Dad he is 80 years and really has no way to sell these cans except through me he Told me what he wants for it and that is what i set it at. He has had this can for almost 40 years and he has been following the can market this whole time He get almost every old car publication out there and throws nothing away he uses these for reference. So when you reach 80 and try to sell your collection i'm sure you will try and get every penny you can for it. If anyone has any questions about the can my phone number is on ebay just as is my email address is here. When my dad picked up this can in the early 70 old car weekley had one in there auction results had just sold one for $1,000. He also has a copy of old car weekly 2004 where an opline can sold for $2100. These cans are not for the everyday can collector. I belive the serious collectors know exactaly what these cans are and what they are worth. My Dads quote is something is only worth what some is willing to pay for it. So as far as someone new to this hobby These cans will let them know the high end and the low end of the market. Thats enough of my ranting. Happy hunting.
