If I am remembering correctly this can dates from around 1900-1910 or 1915. then they switched the label and had the mobiloil above the A and moved the gargoyle to the top and made him red. This style can is the second of 3 styles of gargoyles i've seen used. 1st was the very rare front facing gargoyle. Then the style pictured here and 3rd the most common red gargoyle.

Here is a picture of 2 of the styles of gargoyle quart cans here. sorry no front facing gargoyle for me 5 quart has the only one I have ever seen. maybe he can post a pic of his. The cans are on the middle shelf 2nd & 3rd from right.

If any of my info is wrong please feel free to correct me my dates could be off?

Thanks for the info. I purchased this sign and then one turned up for sale in India. Just want to make sure they aren't making ***** box India fantasy signs of this as well

That may be a foreign sign. Looks like Vacuum Oil Company Ltd. on can.

I was thinking I've noticed lots of times early English signs have that shadowing (or 3d effect) to the lettering before I got to the reply wondering if it was foreign. Really was a nice sign at one time.

I am sure my sign is an original sign from the foreign market. I just got on the eBay and there is one that is almost too good to be true. Just want the opinion of the experts on my sign to ease my thoughts.

Sad thing is that you could take the most legit item just as that sign and sell it out of India and even though its legit, the fact it is in India would scare most people off

Seth,
I had this sign and I believe that it is an original European sign.
