(standing)My name is Andrew Dunn and I have a problem. I can't seem to stop myself. Everytime I go by an antique mall or any place with any kind of sign or gas pump around it I have to stop. It's taking over my life and I can't seem to get it under control!!! I lose sleep at night thinking about the next finds. I spend hours on craigslist and eBay and oldgas just browsing. My wife says I need help but I think she's just jealous of my stuff(laghing out loud with a demented laugh and wringing hands). Any suggestions on how to stop the madness, or better yet quiet my wife up, would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Welcome to PPA (Petroliana Porn Anonymous). My wife quit rolling her eyes a long time ago. She even likes a couple of items.

On Black Friday my wife found a Sale on Anti-Freeze & bought 3 cases of the new colored stuff. I have noticed that it is slowly being used, so I checked both her car & my truck, neither are leaking.

For the last couple of years, my wife has Tried to get me to down size my collection. Yeh Yeh, OK. But you guys know it's hard to sell anything in this economy @ what ya gave for it or a little more. I kept telling her I will just as soon as the economy improves.

I use to have a small glass of Orange juice in the mornings, but she has been serving it w/ every meal & Lately has been serving larger glasses of orange juice.

Ever since I've been drinking more orange juice, I've been sleeping better & later into the mornings. Then when I do get up I just don't have the energy to do much.

I've got to find a tree w/ better tasting Oranges as lately it's been too Sweet!

I am coming up on 40 years old and have found myself over the years getting too involved (including recently). I am fortunate to have come to the realization that this is just stuff and it is merely something that I enjoy and not something that is the basis of my accomplishments or what is most important to me. I am still looking for a few select items, but what has been most valuable to me is the people that I have come across and the amazing interactions with them.

I think we all like the thrill of the hunt, but what is the expense. In my last marriage I know that my desire to collect things definitely hurt the relationship. My kids are now my big focus so I have to keep my hobby to a limit. My girlfriend appreciates my hobby quite a bit, but I have to be careful as it could get out of control. Getting your partner to appreciate your hobby can be a slippery slope that could only feed your desire to acquire more items.

At the end of our lives we will look back on what we have done and there may be some reflection on the items we have acquired, but the most fond memories will most likely come from the people that were a part of our lives.

My recommendation is to focus on some of the items you have and perhaps share some of the rest with others. Have your wife go through them and ask her to pick some that she appreciates. Maybe you and your wife can also meet some other people in the hobby in your area to foster some additional realtionships which will last the rest of your lives.

Just my opinion.

There is nothing wrong here that a day of reconfiguration or organizing would not fix. Get the things out of the garage and just organize. Great stuff, so do not stop now. Pickup all you can if the price is right. As you refine your collection or find a place to hang it, you can sell or trade what you have for what you may like later. Did that at the get go with both hands looking for stuff. Couple years later either sold the smalls or sold what I did not want but had to take in order to get the other stuff.
JUST ORGANIZE.
