(standing)My name is Andrew Dunn and I have a problem. I can't seem to stop myself. Everytime I go by an antique mall or any place with any kind of sign or gas pump around it I have to stop. It's taking over my life and I can't seem to get it under control!!! I lose sleep at night thinking about the next finds. I spend hours on craigslist and eBay and oldgas just browsing. My wife says I need help but I think she's just jealous of my stuff(laghing out loud with a demented laugh and wringing hands). Any suggestions on how to stop the madness, or better yet quiet my wife up, would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Welcome to PPA (Petroliana Porn Anonymous). My wife quit rolling her eyes a long time ago. She even likes a couple of items.

On Black Friday my wife found a Sale on Anti-Freeze & bought 3 cases of the new colored stuff. I have noticed that it is slowly being used, so I checked both her car & my truck, neither are leaking.

For the last couple of years, my wife has Tried to get me to down size my collection. Yeh Yeh, OK. But you guys know it's hard to sell anything in this economy @ what ya gave for it or a little more. I kept telling her I will just as soon as the economy improves.

I use to have a small glass of Orange juice in the mornings, but she has been serving it w/ every meal & Lately has been serving larger glasses of orange juice.

Ever since I've been drinking more orange juice, I've been sleeping better & later into the mornings. Then when I do get up I just don't have the energy to do much.

I've got to find a tree w/ better tasting Oranges as lately it's been too Sweet!

I am coming up on 40 years old and have found myself over the years getting too involved (including recently). I am fortunate to have come to the realization that this is just stuff and it is merely something that I enjoy and not something that is the basis of my accomplishments or what is most important to me. I am still looking for a few select items, but what has been most valuable to me is the people that I have come across and the amazing interactions with them.

I think we all like the thrill of the hunt, but what is the expense. In my last marriage I know that my desire to collect things definitely hurt the relationship. My kids are now my big focus so I have to keep my hobby to a limit. My girlfriend appreciates my hobby quite a bit, but I have to be careful as it could get out of control. Getting your partner to appreciate your hobby can be a slippery slope that could only feed your desire to acquire more items.

At the end of our lives we will look back on what we have done and there may be some reflection on the items we have acquired, but the most fond memories will most likely come from the people that were a part of our lives.

My recommendation is to focus on some of the items you have and perhaps share some of the rest with others. Have your wife go through them and ask her to pick some that she appreciates. Maybe you and your wife can also meet some other people in the hobby in your area to foster some additional realtionships which will last the rest of your lives.

Just my opinion.

There is nothing wrong here that a day of reconfiguration or organizing would not fix. Get the things out of the garage and just organize. Great stuff, so do not stop now. Pickup all you can if the price is right. As you refine your collection or find a place to hang it, you can sell or trade what you have for what you may like later. Did that at the get go with both hands looking for stuff. Couple years later either sold the smalls or sold what I did not want but had to take in order to get the other stuff.
JUST ORGANIZE.

Well i am a director of a christ centered recovery group much like aa or na called celebrate recovery. And i am proud of you for admitting you have a problem. That is the first step now the healing can begin. Now you have to take the apropriate stepss toward fixxing the problem you must distance yourself from your drug of choice. That being said i will be at your house tommarow morning with a truck and trailer and a huge stack off hundred dollar bills. We can do this. You can beat this thing i know it. Lol this was a joke. Nice stuff though looks great.

Andy, I dont think there is a problem at all. I just showed my wife the picture of your garage and told her, "See, I'm not as bad as that guy, we have trail in our garage, so there." Her reply was something to affect that the whole bunch of us are sick and would never grow up. I feel that the problem lies with her, so that means you and I both dont have a problem. Its all in their heads.

My wife has gotten several new(er) cars since I built my garage several years ago. She still parks outside.

Seriously though, Danielle just called. I'm on my way.

Andy, I have a confession to make also. Since I'm getting up in age, I decided this year that I'm cutting out pump restoration & not going to collect anymore petro items. Bad back & hernia problem says "quit messing with that heavy stuff". Maybe start selling off. So, last week a guy comes to my door & asks if there's anyone around my place (I live in the country)that would let him coon hunt. He looked familiar but didn't know who he was. When he told me his name, a bell went off in my mind. I was at his farm 10 to 12 years ago trying to buy two old Gilbarco pumps that his Dad wouldn't sell. So I ask him, "Do you still have those old pumps?" He says yes. He explained that his Dad passed away about 3 months ago, and the pumps were for sale. So, I said, "Can I come & take a look at them? As I remember, they were pretty rough way back then." He says yeah come on over and take a look. Needless to say, "the sickness" took over again. On Christmas eve day, I hook up my small trailer & van and go retrieve the two 'un-gutted' 400 lb. wonders! I back the trailer partially into my shed (not enough room to get it clear in). It's Christmas eve & I'm involved in our church activities. Don't want to start messing with these stinking old gas & diesel pumps, till after Christmas, right? Well, that same day I started spraying a little bit of PB blaster on the nuts & bolts and leave it at that. Oh no! 4 hours later I had most of the heavy stuff gutted with that wonderful smell all over my clothes & with the old diesel & gas draining out of the front of my trailer. When I stopped & came into the house to get cleaned up, I scrubbed & scrubbed & showered to eliminate that precious addicting odor. So, I've found that it's not hard to quit at all! I never even worked on them Christmas day when the family was all here. Big snow storm coming in tomorrow. Maybe I'll just mosey out to the shed & see if the pumps are okay. That's all I'll do! Really!

Yeah I actually had it traded to a guy for a fry and G&B visible pumps plus a bunch of signs and some cash. Before the deal went down he went and got sick on me. If not for that it would be gone.

And a fine opinion it is. My mother , a child of the Depression, recently died at the age of 91. She had lived in the same home for almost 60 years. As the one who is responsible for getting rid of the amazing amount of what I deem to be useless stuff, I now look at the volume of my valuable stuff in a different light. At some point, my wife will likely have the burden of getting rid of what she deems to be my useless stuff. Sign up now to be put on the mailing list when I go. : ). You think I'm kidding, right?

My wife has been giving me a cup of "Dry Gas" every morning hoping it will dry up my gas addiction. Has not worked yet but, I don't have to pee as much.

just need to reorganize a little bit.

I see some open space in the back left corner you can toss a few dozen 5 gallon cans into that hole.

Andy Andy Andy what are we going to do with you? I tried to help you once before and now look what you've gone and done. That Pennzoil stand! That has to go! Wolf's Head sign...it can't stay there! And what about that Pennzoil drum? Sorry Buddy we just can't have you laying drums on thier side, it scratches them. Well I see it is once again time to bring the trailer. I know... I know... It is difficult to say this. But I really think it would be best for you to just let me take this off your hands for a while. At least until you're a little better. ;-D
