I am interested in buying this sign but I wanted to check to see if it is a real sign and get some advice from others before I blow a lot of money on the sign.

This sign is said to be 12x14. I had talked to someone else who believed it was real but when I found a couple others that were suppose to be the same size they measured 14x14.

Yea I did noticed that as well with the color of the flange. I am not sure what to make of it really other than its a fake. I will not be able to look for the stamp because this will be absentee bid situation, but I think I may step back from this one cause I am to uncertain about it.

I have what I believe to be an original with a white flange with a Name and date. Check it out. Same dimensions 14 1\8 x 12 7\8

Black VS white flange could be a geographic or makers difference. AM was from Virginia I believe. Randy on the West coast with one not by AM.

I have no doubt that the signs posted by Greg and Randy are both real, and as noted, made in different parts of the country.I have both the 6 volt and 12 volt versions made by Stout Sign Co,St. Louis Mo.Both have white flanges and both are marked by sign maker,ad number and date.

My 6 volt is marked AD Form 1772A 1-56.My 12 volt is marked EAF 1772A and is dated 10-60.I find it interesting that Randy's sign also shows Form 1772.I will note that the colors on my 6 volt are different from those posted,Both of those show the speckled grey around the orange EXIDE while mine is a solid white.

I made this post so that beginners will not be so afraid of them if they know more about them.Yes,for a good marked original, they can get pricey. But,they are also are hard to beat in battery signs IMO.

I think too much info is no good...the people making the fake now know where to correct there problems. There are many fake signs with the AM markings. I am not saying your sign is fake Greg. I think the more detailed info given on this site is not benefical because eventually this kind of information will make certain repros hard to identify from originals

Well thank you everyone that posted I have learned a lot about this sign in general that before this post I would not have known, which is very valuable to me being new to this.

I agree with you TBird. That is exactly why I did not and will not post pics of either of my signs.I also did not post the exact measurements of mine (different)nor the placement and number of mounting holes on the originals.I also did not say how far the white goes nor did I show where the markings are placed.

I made the post,at the request of a friend of mine, because he and I both believe that sometimes we have to put out some information that may or may not hurt us in order to assure newcomers reading this thread that there are several variations of that sign that appear to be indeed real so that they do not pass up a real sign from an un-founded fear posted on here.

But then again, maybe it just isn't worth it anymore to really work on educating the beginners. But if we don't,who really have the pieces in our collections, who will ???

The sign pictured in the first post is authentic. I held it in my hands at the auction today and is without a doubt in my mind old and original.
