Hello All! I was hoping for some pump plate education. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Martin-Oil-...A-/170971220000Has a Martin pump plate listed and being a Marathon man, I am interested in Martin as well. However, my pump and pump related items for the Marathon acquisitions is a little weak. Is there someone on here who would be interested in taking a moment to tell me if Martin used such pump plates? I matched the logo off the the 2012 Globe Book to the 1962-1970 era. The globe rarity seems to be in the middle and was curious if the pump plate is the same? I have been watching ebay for Martin for about 1.5 years and this is the first plate I recall seeing. Thanks for your time Brian

I'm sure that sign is real, not repro. The book, PCM's Guide to Gas Pump Restoration attributes that pump sign to Martin Oil Service of Blue Island, IL from 1962-1970. They also had a similar sign with "Purple Martin Ethyl" and a bird image where this sign says, "Super Regular"
This is one of those items that separates collectors. Metal sign collectors often pass by plastic signs, especially with any cracks. However, a specific brand collector who has been looking for an extended period of time for this item will be a lot more enthusiastic about paying what it takes to get it.

Yep, those are real.
There are 3 different versions. The one you have, the Purple Martin Ethyl that Jim mentioned, and a 3rd that says Xtra Special Ethyl (Blue is the predominant color)
I sold one of each version last fall on Ebay. They were both in crummy shape, and brought about $100 each.
In 2001 I took about 20 of these plates off of gas pumps at the station in my hometown of Dubuque, Iowa. If you watch the movie "Field of Dreams" You'll see the actual pump plates in that movie that I had/have.
There are also matching globes for each of these pump plates.
I've only seen these plates on the stainless steel pumps of the 60s, so I'd guess they are from that time.

We only had 1 Purple Martin here when I was a kid. So may rodders hung out there. I always thought they were an attractive logo. Like that globe!

Thanks all, I was sure it was real, but have never taken the time to research Martin pump plates. I am familiar with their Globes and love the colors! Thanks again for helping me out!
