Need some advice on cleaning dirty and/or non-smooth finish oil cans. Attaching a photo of an example can with a rough/porous finish and adequate staining. Thanks for the help.

I agree once paint has become chalky I don't have much luck without removing paint.

I agree with Randy. Be happy the way it is cause anything you do will most likely take off more of the graphics.

You may be able to get rid of some of the rust stains with some light rubbing compound, but be careful cause it will take off lithograph is a heartbeat with to much pressure. Test spot it first to see what happens.

I have had both good and bad results with rubbing compound.

I actually got the can posted a lot cleaner by using two products... 3M brake clean... Then Meguiars paint cleaner. I'll post a post-photo shortly. Not perfect, but a definite improvement.

Not perfect, but much better. Keep in mind, lots of grease and oil stains on this can. The backside came out even better. I wouldn't suggest brake clean on every can, but I tested this can before I tried it officially and the paint was still solid.

Be careful with the green scotch pads. Sometimes they can be a little agressive. I agree with the WD-40. Works great if you let it set awhile. #0000 steel wool sometimes works well soaked in WD-40 and your can soaked in it as well. Start as fine as you can and work your way to where you are comfortable. Scotch also makes a blue pad with a sponge that is finer and even Pink one that is finer yet. Dawn dish soap makes a nice soapy solution that can be used as mild cleaner as well.

Like others have said your can looks like it won't clean up that well. If you soak it in WD-40 and just take your fingernail and see if the stains do anything. If not just wipe it off with a soft rag carefully and call it a day.

I would NOT use any brake or parts cleaners of any kind. After trying ALOT of different products and trail and error on alot of different items including wooden decoys, the ONLY thing I will use from now on is WD-40.

Good luck.

WD40, 0000 steel wool, MeGuires cleaning wax are all things that I've used. I've tried other things but these are my favorite tried and true supplies. Of course experience and caution are always will be your best tools.

I use the blue scotch with the sponge and WD and always start off light on the pressure and heavy on the patience.
