Shouldn't this globe given it's age have a black 'T' on it instead of a white 'T'?

what year did they start using white 'T'?

I don't think there's any worry that chimney top globe is genuine and from what is normally the black T era, but my guess would be due to the design they didn't use black around it to highlight the T. That's a rare piece, too bad it's damaged but it's great it was saved even in the present condition as they are scarce globes. It would certainly fill a spot in the collection of someone who doesn't have the many thousands to spend on a good one.

Here's a link to a thread from many moons ago where I asked the same question. From what I remember, no one really knows of an exact date. But I could be wrong. You will have to look through it.

Right around August 1917 (If I remember correctly) were the first photos of the globes in my Texaco Star Books. The globe is etched there's no way to put black in there around the T because of the etching... T-Way or another globe expert can give you a better explaination, better than me.

I was having my morning phone conversation with another MN collector that is a member on here also.

He had the questions but is not computer savy enough to post pics and stuff....so I posted for him.

Once we got to talking though, I really became interested also.

thanks to the answers so far.

It is fun to learn new stuff!

Neat globe. Brought pretty good money considering its condition.

There were very early white T globes such as this solid milk glass etched, as blacktee mentioned earlier. I bought this one from the grandson of the station owner. I've been told it came out shortly after chimney top in the teens it was used on station canopy over pumps. You can see where maybe mold was patched on top of globe to do away with chimney top.
Thanks,
Rod van Pelt

The first one globe pictured was used from 1915-1917. In better condition it is a $15,000+ globe. Ron your globe was used from 1917-1920. They are very cool globes indeed but the one that was on ebay might have a hard time surviving the shipping process because of the damage. At least one side of it still displays ok even with the fading on it. JM2C smile

I have talked with Rod about this globe before. Just plain cool and very, very rare. For any doubters you don't know your Texaco globes. LOL

I was talking about Rod's globe. A different style of Chimney Cap. Rare, Rare, Rare
