I have a 72" texaco sign on the the number nine pole. My grandpa drug it home probably thirty years ago. I recently poured a small concrete pad to put it up. What color green would be correct to paint the pole before I put it up. I will post some pics if I figure out how to do it

Yes the sign looks like that. But the pole does not. I had read somewhere that it was a number nine pole. But it may be the banjo.

#9 Pole looks more like a Shepherds Staff.

I googled number nine pole. That's what I have. Someone may have painted it green years ago. Anyway I gotta get some big concrete anchors and stand it up.

I didn't think they made any other sign to fit the shepherds staff pole other than the 42" Texaco Gasoline/Motor Oil type sign, which isn't the one pictured? Just curious....

Darin--Texaco did have a shepards staff pole that a 6 foot sign was mounted to. I have seen them.

I think you guys are both right in a way.A quick review of reference books by Wayne and Scott mentions two poles other than the banjo. One,called the shepards staff was the early one (20's)and was only 10'tall.Darin,that one may be what you are thinking ab ot with the 42"sign.Then later they used a side mount pole with the 72"signs that Kevin mentioned. When we see a pic,I suspect that it will be the side mount version,18' tall.

Anyway, back to his question,I personally have never seen a tall Texaco pole painted anything other than white.

"Poured a small concrete pad" makes me nervous.. hopefully you've also put in some foundation or pier to withstand the loads imposed and prevent overturning..

The pad is only 19 inches square to fit the base. But it's sitting on a 12 inch diameter hole three feet deep. With steel t post and rebar in the pad. I am gonna use 3/4" anchors. To hold it down. Probably 600 pounds of concrete "just guessing

When it was new 99% sure it would have been white. If you wanted green I think that may look very cool. You could match the letter T or Texaco had a very dark green with their buildings. I'm not talking about the strips at the top of the buildings, but rather the inside walls of the bay area, doors on restrooms, garage doors. Thinking out loud maybe a forest green ? I think maybe some of their later marfak cans had a dark green.

It's a very cool pole, you don't see that many of them.

Congrats !!! Doug
