I want to get opinions about the best and most up to date books about oil cans and signs. I would like a book that tells you approximate values and what to look for when buying cans and signs. I read about a couple of books on the oldgas site, but wanted to get some info from guys who actually have the books. Thanks. ~Jason

I really like this book on signs:

Oil Company Signs, A Collector's Guide - by Scott Benjamin & Wayne Henderson, 1995

If I'm looking to buy a sign I can almost always find it in this book. (Good descriptions, fewer pictures) Prices are 1995 but you get a good idea.
Hard for any pricing to be current for long with todays internet and ebay effects on supply and demand, I would think.

Jason,

If you want info on cans why don't you ask your dad? He probably knows as much as anyone about cans.

Although my dad is a good source, I need something I can take with me to antique stores or sales, good reference guide to keep in my truck. Just wanted to get more opinions on what books others have used. ~Jason

Looks like no one has an opinion. I wish they did, as some of us are new to this. I have the same question in mind. ??????

Guys the problem is we that have been collecting for 10 or more years all have an opinion, its hard to tell another collector witch any thing to buy. Jacks book guide to GAS PUMPs would be great to have in the car to identify a pump, but the price is off on a lot of pumps. the book on cans does not begin to cover the west coast cans. the price on most cans are down right now. but there are certain cans that just keep going up. you have to by what you like and want. if the price is to high don't by it. same with pumps. just have fun and HTH. good luck.

There's a old saying. "You can't pay to much, you can just pay to much, to soon" Use the books if you just want to see nice photos of lots of different stuff. Bottom line is, buy what you like. If you pay a little to much, it won't matter. The value will catch up eventually!! Using the books for a price guide is a waste of time. Go to shows, study the internet, and you'll gain the knowledge. That's my 2 bits.......

No, I don't own any books. well I have a book a friend Oldoc gave me on pumps. I used it yesterday to tell the difference between two pumps. as far as the price of cans. like Butch said. watch ebay and gas bashes , no what you want and buy it. The cans I have I got many years ago. my good friend Ted finds two at a good price, i get one and I do the same for him. I can't afford the high dollar ones, even though I have a few. but like I said. the RIO GRANDE = 750.00 to 1,000.00 quart I did a trade for it. or the Polly Prem = 750.00 in the condision its in. I paid 125.00 for it. when Jason was 15 ha ha .
Larry if butch comes to Colorado for this Bash watch for a mut and jeff team Butch and me. ha ha . he watches everything.
