eBay:
321074499048

The Pegasus doesn't even look half right. Lacking details...
But as you all say, it is correct

Yes sir...sure is an original sign, no doubt.... smile
I would almost wager it's the first one with a Pegasus on it, then came the big Pegasus with Mobiloil round, then the more common keyhole porcelain curb sign with the Pegasus on top of the rectangle with Mobiloil on the bottom.

Really??? The details in the horse are horrible. I have never seen that round sign with the details that bad... I know they made this sign right after the switched from the gargoyle. The tail has no details at all, unlike a the pegasus's i have seen with streaks in the tail.

Mobil is usually good at having their image portrayed correctly and with good detail.

If it real, my bad. Could have sworn it was a repop/ junk....

Oh, it's real.
There was one of these on Ebay for a long time, in similar shape that finally sold for somewhere around $300 if I remember correctly. I have yet to see a really nice high quality example of this particular sign.

One of my very first purchases in the hobby was one of these signs. Here is a link where I asked Oldgas if I got a good deal or not. At the time I didn't even know yet to ask if it was fake. I didn't even know yet that there were fakes, lol!! One thing of note in the thread is the discussion of trying to find a base and frame for it. I have not idea if this frame and base is real or not, but the sign sure looks to be.

Well thanks to all that cleared this up...

I will be the first to admit that i am not a know it all... I know a lot but i learn everyday as we all do..
It fooled me.. Looks very cheap and weird to me as all my Mobil items have a very detailed Pegasus.

Well at least if i see one in the future i will know what to look for.

I'd have to agree that this is absolutely authentic. I've got one just like it and got it from a very reputable collector some 25 years ago. Very same detail...or lack thereof. I remember the guy saying at the time it was an early horse.

This sure was a education to me as I have never seen a pegasus like that before. I guess if someone was making a reproduction or fantasy item they would use the common pegasus we all know.

So what does everyone feel about the frame and base? Authentic? And if not, is it at least a proper designed fake? Or should the base be a casting? Probably tough to even know I suppose.

definately an original sign...I think the stand is generic or homemade. It looks shortened also...
However, the BUICK sign they are selling as an original for $450 is DEFINATELY a repo!!!! Beware!
They have some great original signs BUT I sure hate to see an obvious repo mixed in and sold as original....
I also see a negative for selling a repo T-53 Pegasus...
Not trying to slam them, only pointing out a few things...

I would personally date the sign from 1932 to 1935. Some of the Mobilgas shields used the "Product of A" slogan for those few early years after the Socony and Vacuum merger so I feel pretty confident these were produced at the same time. I have not seen the slogan used on a shield sign dated 1936 or later.

What Darin said. The book Oil Company Signs by Benjamin and Henderson list what I believe is this sign on page 118. The book dates it from 1932-1935.

Does the book show it as a lollipop or say anything to the fact?

It is listed in the curb sign section. Not all listed signs have pictures of the actual sign. There are pictures in the book but most signs are just described with wording

I guess my approximation was pretty good, I don't even own that book, lol. I just went from the knowledge I have gained over the years of looking at the dates on all the shields that come up for sale on line, so this is what a lot of members mean when they say years of experience has brought them the knowledge. wink

This sign is on ebay auction now with a low reserve. The sign and ring are original, the base is not. Great chance to own a early pegasus piece! Auction ends Saturday 3/2.

The previous ebay listing now reads:

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.

Looks like the seller ended it early to relist it.
