Tearing down my Bennett DM150. Trying to remove the 3/4" pipe that runs across the top inside to the filter outside. It threads into a 90 degree elbow. Looks like a white cement sealer on the threads. Would it be safe to put a little heat to the elbow? Just a little nervous around gas stuff and fire.

I usually apply heat to the old pipe fittings. Work slowly and try often to break them loose between heatings. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I have heated up too many pipes to count to remove from gas pumps during teardown and never had one flame up from old gas. Unless it's a pump that you just disconnected from a fuel feed line, I don't think your going to have an issue with gas or the thread compound.

Thanks
Mike

Careful . Mine had been un-hooked since 1955 and it had some foul liquid greenish solution that I drained and burned during disassembly. There was quite a bit in the pump.Soaked it up in some news papers and burned it in the fire pit.I wrestled with dis-assembly and found that if I soaked all the fittings with liquid wrench and let set for a day or two , and then overtightened & then backed off it worked pretty good with out heating .Some it took several day's and soakings to break stuff loose. Good luck. Smelly is correct. It will stay in the garage and on your coveralls.Like forever.

Should have used Tranny Fluid mixed w/ Lacquer Thinner, works 10x better/faster that penetrating oil or liq. wrench.

"foul liquid greenish solution"
Most likely Off Road Diesel Fuel.

Heat it up! You won't have any problems. I usually use a butane torch and it gets the joint hot enough to loosen the grip of the old pipe sealer.

A little heat from the Butane torch and it came right apart. Thanks for all the input. j
