I have an old 5 gallon oil can. G.R. Co. is in huge block letters on the front. The top of the screw lid says Ellisco and there is an oval plate which says Geo. D. Ellis & Sons, Inc. Super Service Can 5 Gallons Pat Applied for, Philadelphia. Another can like this has been posted on your site, but this one is different because of the G.R.Co. on the front. Does anyone know the age of this can, what the G.R.Co. stands for and value? I can't figure out how to attach a picture, but I will send one to you if you like. Thanks.

Ellisco still makes "Test Measures". That is what a can for gasoline pump calibration is called. It sounds like you have a 5 gal., gasoline measuring can. I have seen several cans like that on peoples porches, mistaken as milk cans. The later cans have a glass tube and +,- guage to measure to the cubic inch.
Usually there is a chain that connects the top to the can. I'm no historian , but I think it was sometime around 1930 when the name was changed from Gulf Refining To Gulf Oil.

Carole: Your can should also have a calibration marker inside the neck - it should look something like this. This was so the delivery person had a mark to go by when he filled the transfer can. Then he would transfer the oil over to the lubester from the truck. Later . . . Jim [This message has been edited by T-way (edited 12-10-2007).]
