Asking for some expertise. I'm a newbie and was hoping this was the real deal. I have done a little research and it's not looking good. If indeed this is a repo it was deviously created to fool.

I was questioning the same thing! Wondering if it were some sort of reverse negative photo post or something. I would highly doubt the sign is a reproduction, but the reverse intrigues me. It certainly never would have been hung at a station, S-V wouldn't have allowed it to go up if it is indeed backwards. Texlite Dallas did make those red border signs in the very early 30's, no question about that.
It looks a bit rusty/toasty, so I wonder if it was a defective sign that might have been scrapped and buried at one time? Just a thought.

sorry for the backwards looking pic. I took the pic w/ a mac computer...dunno why it turned out like that. I'll get a better pic up later. This is a doublesided sign.

I would say it is a genuine 1932 sign then.

to clarify, the lettering is not backwards, just appears that way due to the camera I used.

I guess one concern was the orange rustiness too it. I've heard that can be a red flag. Also the rear legs of the pegasus appear to go straight down towards the letters. On others I've noticed the legs sort of go out to an angle. Also , MOBILGAS lettering is a bluish-purple?

The early 1930's Mobilgas shields used a more true Cobalt blue, which does have a nice blue/purple color to it, especially if it has been lightened a bit by sun-fade, which can happen to the red color as well. The later shields used a different darker blue color. I personally do not think you have anything to worry about in the line of reproduction, but I'm sure others will give their opinions as well on authenticity.

Thanks for that information on the cobalt blue coloring. All opinions are very welcome. I'm very interested in learning all I can about petrolina.

Agree with Darin, but man that thing has some "patina" to it.

So 100% original.
