Hey all, just picked up this large keyhole sign. When the gentlemn sent me the picture I assumed it was the curb sign without the frame. I got to it and it wouldnt even fit in the Jeep..lol. Measures 6' by 4.5' tall and it's single sided. I havent been able to find any info at all in any books/web. My first thoughts were the back of an oil tanker but any ideas??
Mainly focused on Oilzum, Jenney, Harris Oil items & original paint gas pumps.

Hi Eric, I think it is a curb sign as well - normally sit on a pole so I assume it should have some kind of frame, at least in the lower parts. Seem to see holes there on the bottom of the sign. But the measurements are huge... As of age.. just after WW2 when the Pegasus showed up on oil cans. br Claes

There are 4 original holes along the bottom edge. Also a hole on each side about 12" up from the bottom. Those are surely factory holes. Now there is a single hole right above the pegasus not exactly centered (can't confirm it's original but is neatly drilled)

I think this was a sign that mounted at the roof line of some stations or canopies. I have seen this large size sign before, but never in a period photo to identify placement for certain. Darin

If it's single-sided, it would have been displayed against a wall or some other flat surface. If double-sided, display would have been such that both sides could be viewed. Can't imagine it was driveway sign because of the size. I've seen these before, but never known how they were displayed.

Here is a single sided one that sold last year at a nearby auction. I believe it was about about 10 feet wide. It was two pieces....you can see the seam.

OK, thanks Mr Wadham's for the photo. Popular opinion makes the most sense, it appears that it was a building sign that came in a few different sizes.
