Hello All,
As some may have read last Wednesday in the daily check in, this sign was one of a few items a man brought to me at work that he had duplicates of and asked if I was interested in buying. He worked for a local jobber that started as Hi-Speed, went to Pure, then Union 76, and is still in business today. He cleaned the items out of a bulk plant years ago, so while I shouldn't have any doubts on authenticity, you have to be careful these days. He also brought me a Pure Premium plate, as well as a set of Hi-Speed Diesel lenses, which I have no doubts of authenticity of these items.
The only reason I'm asking on the key sign is that the ones I've researched on Ebay have rounded corners and the Burdick Chicago mark in the lower right. They also use a different type of grommet than these. There is an identical sign to this one on the bathroom door at the jobber's office, and one of the owners who grew up in the business in his mid-50's told me it's been on the bathroom door all his memory. (Or as he put it, FOREVER, lol!)
So, are there two different versions of this sign, one with rounded corners and the other squared? There certainly could have been more than one manufacturer of these signs for Pure.
Thanks for any insight or opinions,
Darin
Below are pics of the front and back, as well as a couple of the grommets. The line on the back photo is from my camera somehow.

That is a neat sign. I would put my money on the sign being authentic based on the back of the sign alone. I don't think I have ever seen a reproduction sign with the old green or grey speckled backs like alot of signs had in the 50's.

Darin,
The looks of the back,IMO,would tell me this porcelain sign is an original.Heavy porcelain back and the markings lead me to believe it is the real deal.Holding in hand would help.Only my opinion. grin

Thanks for the help and reassurance gentleman. The sign is 11 1/4" by 6 1/8" tall, and has nice shelving, which I know you cannot go on alone these days. It is also "weighty" for it's size, another plus in my opinion!

Darin thats the real deal!!
Just don't let anyone ever tell you that they made square cornered pump plates or that the round 11.5 inch ones are original.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks Mike. I knew about the repro square corner pump plates and the fake rounds, but I just wanted to know about this sign in particular as it looks like it comes up for sale less often than the rounded corner version.

...there are three versions: there's also a flat plastic sign of the same design, with 'Be Sure With Pure' in the Pure logo, so it's older than you might think...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Thanks Mark, I appreciate the extra information.
While I'm mostly a Mobil guy, I do have a mini Pure collection, 4 different globes, signs, cans, etc., and it's nice to learn as much information about these items as well.
