Property crimes are low on the priority totem pole in most police departments, and I can imagine their attitude towards something as "frivolous" as a gas pump sign. On the flip side, a shop lifting at Wal-Mart can draw 2-3 patrol cars.

oh man u should have seen their faces when i went into the police station they were like "porcelain signs" and i said yes porcelain signs and when i picked up the one sign they had they didnt even talk to me they had a drug sniffing dog there and they said they were too busy
