The Texas Company 1939 Color Chart and Painting Standardization Manual (which would, for all intents and purposes, have been valid through the early '80's) lists only two shades of red. #15 Dark Red was used on "[wooden] barrels, concrete floors, brick settings, ship's decks, etc.". This would obviously have been a "brick" red. #14 Red was used for "Trade-mark star, fire equipment, [FIRE-CHIEF and INDIAN] gasoline pumps, and lubricators.". This was the classic "TEXACO-red" and should be quite easy to distinguish from the dark red.
Unfortunately, the manual does not list manufacturers' codes. For what it's worth, though, Valspar still makes a "Colonial Red" which is a dead-ringer for TEXACO-red.
Hope this helps.
