I had a customer want to return Jack's book TWO MONTHS after buying the book because he said it had a binding problem. I contacted Krause Publications and they indicated that they had not heard of this problem with any of the over 6,000 books they have sold. I told the customer to contact Krause. I would not 'exchange' the book. Any of you had problems? P.S. I'm NOT knocking the book in ANY way. It's the best thing I've seen in my 25+ years of collecting. Ron

This type of binding is called 'Perfect Bound'
The entire book is printed and the pages are rough cut then stacked in order. All the 'spine' edges are then cut at once with a guilotine cutter. The book is clamped while the cutting is done and then moves to a station where a thick wax-like glue is slathered across the cut edges. Imediately the printed cover is applied and wrapped to the front and back. The book proceeds to the final trim station where the remaining edges are trimed to the finish size.
This is a good binding process providing that the glue is adquately applied and the pages and back are pressed into the glue firmly upon assembly.
However, if the pages shift during the transfer from the initial trim to the glue station, complete glue-up will not occure and the book can come apart. Rough handling, forcing the pages to lay flat when the book is open, and other extreme use can cause the binding to fail.
A quality local small print shop should be able to trim off the spine, re-apply a new coat of glue and add a binder strip to hold everything back together. You would loose the spine - but the book would be intact.
Hope this helps.
Later . . .
Jim

I personally have sold over 1500 copies of the book myself. Early on, one purchaser complained the book was coming apart, so I replaced it. It was the only one I ever replaced. The only other books that I heard about coming apart was my own copy and one from another collector. Both of us agreed it was from being used so much. I personally open and close my copy 3-4 times per day. What I did (and the other person also did after I told him) was to take it apart, punch three holes in it a put it in a loose leaf binder. Actually it is more convenient to use, as you can lay the book flat and not have to worry about the book closing on you. Jack Sim

My book has lost the pages up to the American cash recorder pump. I will take it to a printer to see if they can repair it. I thought I was the only one?
Love the book Jack!

My pages from 177-187 just fell out one day. I didn't like it but there are bigger problems in the world and this seemed rather minor compared to those.

Like any book with this type of binding, the more it is opened, the more the chances of this happening are.
I've had it happen with both my globe books and anticipate it happening with the pump book. Heck, my bible even has pages coming out.
It's not a fault of the book, the binder, the printer, publisher, seller and certainly not of the author. The fault can only be placed with the user. And, who cares, I bought mine to use, not as a collectable. My tools get dirty and broken from use.
Find someone with a paper drill (print shops) and have them drill three holes -now, before it comes apart. Then put it in a three ring binder of the appropriate size, and keep useing the heck of of it.

We've sold nearly 1000 copies also and have not had that complaint. We have a copy at each of the 6 phones and they are all coming apart, but they are from the beginning and get flipped thru non-stop everyday. I wouldn't exchange after two months either!

So far so good... one year of hard miles on mine and it still looks good. I try not to bend the pages back and stuff like that. I figured when I got it that a book of that size it would come apart easily, so I used caution. Are the Victors, Hayes Cf's and the Rheems going to be in the new edition?
I remember the good old days when gold was worth more than rust!

Aquaelvis: No Victors. One Hayes. No CFs (?). One Rheems. Sure could use some help with some of these pumps. Dick Bennett did get me a nice piece on the Keesee's. Does anyone out there have anything I could buy, borrow or copy? Jack

I'm of the opinion that you could manufacture 600 anvils and a handfull of dudes would manage to split theirs in half. I would say if you check out the physical integrity of Jack's book it's fine. I use the pure snot out of mine and the pages are perfect. Chances are the overall batting average of this book is 998. Just my two cents worth.
