Two of these were mounted back to back on a frame. An Esso script globe lens, and presumably some sort of body in the frame, projected thru the openings. Standard of New Jersey (Esso, Exxon). Used 1926-1933 or so in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, DC, West Virginia, Virginia, North and South Carolina only.

No idea. A man has it for sale and I wanted to confirm my thoughts and sign before I purchase it.

Is there something I should be aware of? Are there fakes of this sign? PM if so please.

That is a nice sign. I doubt very much that it's a repro, too unusual. If that sign is 24" high, that hole can't be much more than 9" in diameter.

Gary

Edit: Now that I look at the sign again, if it's 92" wide, it has to be taller than 24". More like 36", or 42" high?

I'm just going by the proportions of the size.

Seeing that Metal Body globes are shown on pumps, lenses on sign are most likely either 15" or 16.5"

According to above pic's, 2 signs back to back on a can.
Your sign is like 1st pic, 2nd pic is a little fancier.

...signs in the pics have opal glass letters, but are otherwise very similar...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Wonder why the quotation marks are different? Is that the way quotation marks are supposed to be used? I thouht both sides had the pointed end down.

I find that odd also Jaytee even though I'm sure these are 100% original signs. Standard Oil probably saved a little money and just used the same stencil for both quotation marks. That of course is just a guess. Love these signs smile!!! Still strange why they did this with the milkglass insert version on the other style of sign though.

That's the proper way to make quotation marks. That's how, I learned to make them in grade school. Computer fonts changed all that...for simplicity sake opening quotation marks and closing quotation marks were made to look the same.

I started school at the age of 4 in 1971.

Yah I guess I should of paid more attention in school instead of building sprint cars with the old man and installing clutches and reeds in my motorcycles....when I was 7 smile. Back to the subject at hand, Great Standard sign by all means. Hope I spelled all that with ample correctness.
