So my Brother in Law sends me this pic of a PPP he bought. Soon as I saw the seemingly artificial rust stains I got a little scared for him. So is this thing real or repop? I've told him a million times to join this site before he goes spending money on this stuff. I hope he didn't mess up!!

Looks like a sign from India or Argentina, I've seen many of these on ebay. Fake in my opinion. Ted

So it's fake. I pretty much thought so as soon as I saw it!! I've told him a million times!!! Join the site before you buy anything outside of an oil can!! In fact, isn't the "Reg T M" vs the "Reg U.S. Pat. Off." one of the things that helps date these pieces? Isn't there some known date point when this changed? Love "the real McCoy" pic Randy

There is a small porcelain Mobil sign w/ pegasus that is very similar to this Texaco (its also dated to deceive...its a repop)...Hopefully he didnt pay too much - if he bought it on ebay tell him to send it packin back to seller.

The T being closed at the bottom with a black line tells it all! There's lots of original Texaco signs where the black surrounds the entire T, starting in the early 30's. In other words. Your statement is false.

THEY MADE 8", 10", AND 15" PLATES
I HOPE NEW COLLECTORS SAVE THIS. IT'S BEEN POSTED FOR ALL THE YEARS I'VE BEEN ON HERE, AND I'M SURE WELL BEFORE THAT.

I knew I had seen this sign on Ebay . I searched completed listings for this sign .I could not find it under gas and oil signs .I did find it though-under decorative collectibles .The seller sold it as a decoration ,and plainly said they had no idea how old it was.the seller said it was 9" in the listing .Looks like he paid slightly over 50 bucks for it .

I saw that sign on Ebay ,and almost bid on it .The sign was listed as a decorative collectible .The listing said 9" .The lady said she had no idea how old it was,and did not claim it was real .I thought it would make a good decoration ,but it was obvious that it was not a real Texaco .

So if 1930 is when the date changed would some of the 1930 signs say "REG US PAT OFF" ,and some say "REG TM" since it was the changeover year ? .I know the little sign is a repo because there are no real 9" Texaco signs (assuming the lady measured it right). But I don't want to pass on a real 1930 sign thats real if I ever see one .Also someone posted not long ago that Texaco did not date signs of this period, but here is a real dated sign.

If it says "REG US PAT OFF" it won't be dated. The only ones dated are the "REG TM".

Never seen a Texaco sign dated before 1930, you won't find a U.S. REG. PAT. OFF. dated 1930 that's a safe bet. At least not a utility plate. Now you may find a flange sign or other with the larger TM ?

Thanks for all your help guys!!!! I'm glad you chimed in Doug, I was really hoping for your insight on this. I pray things are going okay!!! I've emailed a link to this thread to my Brother in Law. He called yesterday and although a little bummed, and still slightly sceptical for a moment, he is chalking it up to a lesson learned. Steve, if your reading this, time to join in on the fun at 'ole Oldgas. There is no where better where you can tap into this hobby. And it's free

OOps my bad, I learn many new things on here all the time. Thanx, BlackTee for pointing that out with out being nasty and making fun of my ignorance. This is one of the reasons I tend to stick with the bigger signs and stay away from these PPPs. ,,,,but it reminds also that I need to educate my self more about these.

Randy, Any chance you could post a pic of the back of your sign just so we have the hole story on at least one true authentic sign. Thanks!!

So what should a real one of these, say one from the 20's-30's, in like 8 condition, sell for?
