this question may sound dumb- is there a trick to removing the pour spout on a filpruf bottle? I have one that twists a couple of degrees (maybe 10-15), it might go further but i don't want to risk breaking anything and dont know how much force it should require. any help would be appreciated

Brad, I believe there are two ways to get the spout off a Filpruf bottle......break the bottle, or break the spout......Jarvis can probably help with breaking the glass.
Kidding aside....I don't think the tops are removeable.

Spouts are held on with a SNAP RING. I was "told" to use locksmith picking tools for releasing the ring for removing the spout. I HAVE NOT TRIED IT. DB

Does anyone know what the name "Filpruf" is supposed to denote? I mean - having a bottle be "fill-proof" seems counterproductive...
Now, Jarvis-proof I can understand...
Wes

I think the meaning is that it couldn't be filled with any other kind of oil besides Mobiloil. They didn't want generic or reclaimed oil to be put into their bottles and then passed off as Mobil.

Wes, About the time Jarvis was born, they started useing PLASTIC OIL BOTTLES ! LOL Sorry J.J.
Inside the bracket [fitting] on the side is a small slot [about 3/16 x 1/2"] that the oil was forced thru into the bottle. The HIGH BOY oil pump had a special fitting to accept these bottles. DB

The bottles require a special adapter that attaches to the spout so they can be filled from a bulk tank or lubester.I have seen the adapters from time to time on ebay and at swap meets.I believe thats the only way to fill them.I agree with Dick,I was told to try to remove the snap ring with pliers but I wouldn't want to risk breaking the bottle.

To clean it, could you spray in a ton of, say, carb cleaner or brake cleaner, and slosh it around? Just a thought.

If you want to clean a filpruf bottle, just immerse it in solvent, gas, warm water, mineral spirits, whatever & they come out nice. The liquid goes in past the top & then swirl it around, shake it etc., pour it out. No fussing with trying to remove the top, etc. They're WAY to expensive to replace!!

I think that Don Hubert from ILL might have your answer.I remember him saying that Mobil made these bottles so they couldnt be filled with generic oil and sold as top quality oil,as Seth stated.I remember him stating that the oil reps and station owners had a special tool for removing the tops off the jars.My2cents
