Just wondering if this is a grease pail or a fire pail as I know Standard Oil had both but I think the Standard fire pail was stamped FIRE. Any input would be great,Thanks (Pic is from the web but identical right down to the rust to mine)

I believe 20th century fire fighting pails should be a bright color and or marked with Fire or Sand on them somewhere. Earlier ones can be found in darker colors.

As a side question, is it possible that pails like this might have been offered in stations for sale to the general public?

The two pails on the right side were originally filled with grease and sold. The Bowtie B/A logo dates these to the 1940's. I also have 2 Imperial 3 star pails and a North Star grease pail.

These were marketed so that once the grease was used up the pail could be re-purposed as an useful item.
