Well... the "winged V" came about during WWII as part of Chevron's support of the war. That style "chevron" ended in the late 60's to very early 70's. However the bottom picture is strange... I've never seen the red as the top color on the chevron... Maybe others have an idea on that???

OK...I am trying to date the winged V sign. Found a few on the net but no real time period other than could be 60's. It appears to be one side of a two sided sign. No date marks found on sign.

That is interesting what you have pointed out and noticed as well.
I found a similar sign which was also a two piece that had an additional piece on top which was Chevron dealer also outlined with neon.
The neon holes and plumbing do match that sign.
But the blue is on top.

Chevroid,
When I toggle in [Ctrl+ to enlarge the image on monitor], I see the Hallmark as 2 separate pieces.
With Photo Shop I see them like this;

The Gasoline sign is half of a 2 piece, 1 on each side of pole. Look at top & bottom & I think you'll see the indentations for the pole.

So when I laid it out on the deck of the truck I had it backwards?
I placed them together with the two flanges meeting.
Mystery solved.......I think.

Dick - Yep, the color is in the right order with your pic. I just don't know what the first version would have been... I just don't think it was a Chevron chevron... If it was, it would have had a short life in the Chevron Mktg world as the Company was death on incorrect signage.

ok, now I see it, yep a Chevron sign. I just kept looking at the rusted area on the blue and didn't think about flipping it over to the other side. Anyway, nice signs, really like the embossed one, great find!

I'll turn it over and post a picture of the back sides.
Also of one I found on the net with the Chevron Dealer piece above.
The way the sign is flanged and the way it was bolted together was with the blue down.

At any rate thanks for the comments.

Dick,
The signs are at my shop and will take some pics of the backsides in the morning.
Yes they are two pieces.
Chevroid, yes I thought they were a good find too, both were nailed to a shop of a small antique store off the beaten track.
Even got 6 outboard cans with it!

marinerone,
You confirmed what I see, no picture needed now [for me].

Look at where the standoffs are for neon & how they line up.[vertical lines are where the standoffs are]

In 1989 [next door to where gaspumpRob lives Now] I had heard of a couple of signs on river bank, so I asked rancher about them. They were buried under a car body & power pole. A few years later during a flood stage they disappeared down river. It was a matched pair like your embossed one.

Dick,

Here are photos of the backsides of the signs.
Placing them together the first time was a "brain fart" on my part. It seemed like the logical way to do it. Not being a Chevron collector to date I guess my peers can let me go on that! Now I am a Chevron collector!
You will note in the pictures below this the sign I pulled off the net should be what it supposed to look like. Missing the Chevron Dealer portion. Does anyone have that?
The embossed sign is one side of a two sided as commented. It will look just fine on the wall. Still looking for manufacture date. Did they put dates on them like Texaco etc.?
At any rate I appreciate the comments and clarification.
