I was at a big flea market last weekend and saw a pump for sale. The pump wasn't in my book (to new?). The brand was something like "avery - hendall"? approx a 60's pump. It was strange cuz the hose came out of the top and was on a swivel it spun to whatever side you were parked on. THey had $300.00 on it. It had a CALTEX decal on the front also. Just wondering if anyone had info on it.

When you registered you didn't put down where you live, but my guess is England (possibly Canada) or Australia. What you are looking at is a British pump, probably a Gilbarco, maybe a Bowser. I understand that in Australia they call all gas pumps bowsers (no matter who made it) as they were probably the first to be imported. I may be wrong about this, but I believe Caltex is Australian Texaco.

The brand of the pump is "Avery Hardoll", and it is a British pump, and it was probably also manufactured in Canada and Australia (Common Wealth). Here are a couple of pix of pumps (not mine).
I don't think these pumps had globes originally. Pictures are from The Fifties Corner in Switzerland (not Route 66 as previously said). Pumps in Europe often used radial arms in order to pump gas from anywhere around the pump. The Caltex brand is still used in many parts of the world. In Sweden it replaced Texaco between 1947-67.

Hi Junior,
It's quite possible this pump originated from Ireland. Avery Hardoll (manufactured in the UK) pumps were common place here in Ireland one time. Caltex was also used as a brand name instead of Texaco as used in the UK and I have came across Avery Hardoll pumps with Caltex markings on them. Hope this sheds some light on your find.

Thousands of people come from Europe to travel the entire Route 66. In St. Louis, we see tour guide escourted groups on rented Harleys passing through. Some tourist spots along the way say that a large percentage, sometimes a majority, of their visitors are from out of the USA.
Seems like more Europeans are enthusiastic about Route 66 than the younger generation here. Strange, but true.

Nostalgia is pretty big over there but they dont always get it right, or they adapt or lose in the translation.
For example some folks over there are very enamored in Wild West or Cowboy culture. If you went there and saw some of the western themed items it would remind you of going to Woolworth's as a kid and coming out as a dime-store cowboy...Except these are adults and they look like 100 Euro cowboy's..LOL. Like they may have a Western night party.
Anyway the Route 66 is a big thing over there, not unusual to go to a big department store in Germany and see US plates from the 70's and 80's for sale for 15 or 20 bucks.. the type that go on ebay for 4.00

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< <<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Dodogas the dime-bag Kowboy..LOL
