Not sure this is the correct forum list for this, but important reminder to those packaging painted signs, cans, etc. for shipping. Never wrap in bubble wrap or any plastic. First wrap the item in newspaper to prevent the plastic from touching the painted surface. Certain types of paint produces a chemical reaction with plastic and will permanently etch the paint. I have had this happen with a nice sign and an oil can lately. The oil can was purchased at a flea market and placed in a plastic grocery bag. When I got home, the plastic had reacted with the paint on the can and stuck to it in places etching the paint.

I don't need a picture, I understand what you are advising us, I will try and keep this in mind when I ship anything.

I'm as guilty as anyone in making wrapping mistakes and doing damage. Although a costly lesson, it's one that I rarely forget. Thanks for the wake up reminder. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I never put bubble wrap next to anything ! Painted metal, porcelain, globe lens either side etc... NEVER !!! Always wrap with newspaper/paper towels first.

If an object is that sensitive, then I'd advise against newsprint, also.

Totally agree. Bubble wrap is really packing material,(fill the gaps),not universal wrapping material. ....those lil bubbles can cost you money in the long run.

I've shipped and received MANY cans and tin signs wrapped in bubble wrap.. Never had an issue? I would guess that the reaction was from something else other than the plastic? Just a guess?

It wont happen overnight but I have had and seen bubble wrap leave dimple marks on tin and porcelain. as far as baggies around cans I am not sure but I am not taking a chance. Paper towels then wrap it up in a baggie, I agree I would not use newspaper either.

I've NEVER have seen a problem on cans sent to me wrapped w/ bubble or sealed in ziplock bags. I prefer it over styro peanuts.

I've never had any problems either, seems like a temperature change during shipping would make plastic expand/contrast..

I suspect that it was left laying in direct sun for a period of time [in car, maybe on way or at home]?

Bought a composite can from a guy who put it in a ziploc bag. In the week and half it took to get the can.. the small trace of oil left in the can softened the outside of the can and ruined it. it CAN happen!! Wrap it in paper towels or something that will soak up liquid before putting in ziploc or wrapping in bubble wrap.

If an object is that sensitive, then I'd advise against newsprint, also. I can see where the ink from a newspaper could come off and stain, but you can also by end rolls of news print paper (un-printed)from your local newspaper very inexpensively and they work well. Also good for packing.

Heres what I've heard. Some(Most?)bubble wrap is made with petroleum by products. It actually can react with oil based some paints on signs or whatever, and leaves marks like when you find NOS stuff and cant get that last little bit of gloss back in areas. It happens sometimes -not all. I've also heard there is some synthetic stuff that wont do this. Disposable baby diapers, paper towels or rags are safe. Its easy to get lazy and just wrap it in bubble wrap and put it in a box, though.

I have had some auto painted bumper covers that were wrapped in bubble on shelves and yes after time the bubble does leave marks in the paint.

Also good for packing. Correct. I was thinking of printed paper. Again, I feel the stability of the object or the finish should determine your choice of materials. But, better safe than sorry, I guess.
